If there were any in the large audience last night at the Herron theater who failed to appreciate the “JMummy and the Humming Bird" as presented by Mr, Paul Gilmore and hjs players, we have not met them. Paul Gilmore gives a very even and consistent readng of hs role, as the Mummy. Mr, Gilmore has in this play one that he can play as long as Joseph Jefferson played Rip Van Wikle. Guiseppe is particularly fine. His best scene, the ome in which tete- atete with Lord Lumley he endeav- ors, first to understand English and then to tell of his wrongs of his suf- ferings to the sympathetic English- man is a marvelously fine piece of work and received well merited ap- plause. Signor D'Orelli makes a very ac- ceptable Frenchman and certainly is abominable enough in disposition to merit the fate which would undoubt- edly have been his if there had been one more act, Miss Kathryn Hutchison, sweet of face, and beautifully gowned, makes a very womanly and womanish Lady Lumley. One cannot quite see what she finds attractive in the insane, dancing little Frenchman, but one can easily see what she misses in her husband and her faults are not very serious after all. The charming Ruth, who tells plain truth with a candor and a practical twist that are very convine- ing. She also indulges in one fit of rage which is becoming and not wholly unreasonable. Credit for this consummation seems to be- long to Mr. B, P. Kelly, of Griffin, assisted by Mr, N. K. Lewis, of the same place. Among the many people victimized by this smooth artist in the Griffin section were Messrs. Kelly and Lewis and Mr. Sim Griffin, friends and neighbors, who, after the faker's visit, began comparing notes, and finally became suspicious. As a re- sult, they decided to wire Armour & Co., of New York, asking if the firm had an agent in this field with such a proposition. The reply came promptly that any party so repre- senting himself was a fraud. This was about two days after the swin- dler visited the seciion. Mr. B, P Kelly at once started in pursuit, ile came to Lakeland only Lo tind that the objecy of s pursuit had gone. By questioning the porter of the Tremont Hotel, he ascertained that the man of many aliases, whom for conventence we will reter to as *Nelson,” had bought a ticket to Tampa, Mr. Kelly immediately fol- lowed and for some thirty-six hours, day and night, he scarcely rested from the chase. His persisience was rewarded Sunday aiternoon, when, after having visited every hotel, the- ater and resort in and around Tam- pa, the object of his search stepped off a car at Ballast Point, within a few feet of where he was standing. Mr. Kelly promptly eclipsed himselt, lest his quarry should take flight, and watched Nelson until the later returned to the city., At Tibbett's corner he watched Nelson take a Sul- phur Springs car, and then he has- tened to police headquarters where four men were put at his disposal, the police having previously been notified of the chase. Two officers went out to Sulphur Springs while Kelly and the other two waited at the Ybor City car junction. The of- ficers found Nelson in the act of tak- ing a car back to the city. They said nothing to him but got on the same car, which Kelly and the other men boarded at the junction. Kelly greeted Nelson, but the latter pre- tended that there was a mistake and declined to recognize Kelly. He soon saw, however, that the game was up and acknowledged his identity. It is certain that Mr. Kelly ex- ercised remarkable sagacity in going to a strange city and running down this shrewd criminal and successful- ly placing him behind the bars. Had it not been for him and Mr. Lewis this fellow would still be at large and going ahout the country victimizing innocent parties, and the public owes a debt to the intelli- gence and determnation of these two gentlemen. Kornegay Children Begging in Tampa It will be remembered that sev- eral weeks ago a Mrs. Kornegay, of Mount Olive, N. ., was arrested on the streets of Laseland for begging for an orphan asylum, when in fact she was using the money for her personal use. The latest develop- ments in the Kornegay household, taken from yesterday's Tampa Tri- bune, follows: “Edna Tallock and Irene Korne- gay, twelve-year-old girls, were dis- covered begging on the streets sev- eral days ago by one of the ladies of the Salvation Army, who took them to see Superintendent Roy 'G. Har- per, of the Associated Charities, The latter learned that one of the girls was the daughter of Mrs. H. C. Kor- negay, luperlntendenl of an orphan- |3 age at Mount Olive, N. C., and tele- graphed hcrttom;hlmm dren should not be allowed to re- main in a strange city and make | their way by begging. The reply from the mother was that the girls had been placed in the care of Mrs. PAJE FIVE The girls had $7 in money in their possession when Mr. Harper saw them ,and they told him that they had made a tour of the State beg- ging for the institution, also that they had come from Sanford to Port Tampa with Mrs. Manning, at whose home they were stopping. “Superintendent Harper graphed the circumstances to Mar- cus Fagg, president of the Children's Home Society of Florida, in Jack- sonville, and received the following reply: “‘Turn them down. phanage. FAGG.' “Following this Superintendent Harper sent Miss Vivian Kendrick, of the Associated Charities, accom- panied by Miss Mary Taylor, proba- tion officer of the Juvenile oCurt, to Port Tampa to apprehend the chil- dren and take charge of them. The ladies arrived in Port Tampa a few minutes after the girls had taken a train to another city.” BRINGYOURGIRL to the splendid soda fountain at this drug 'store.
