Compa ny g [ BN ] Tt I hereby announce myself a candi- date for the office of Tax Collector of DRANE BU"_D'NG PHONE X B T O Candidates who want the Sheriff’s job in Duval county, and, who, to further their interests, are casting some rocks at the incumbent of that office, are giving Jacksonville some unenviable advertising by publishing gruesome lists of murders, holdups, ete., that have taken place in that city, many of which have gone un- punished. It makes a pretty bad looking record, although probably not worse than other cities of similar size would present. Jacksonville is a city now, with the wickedness that goes to make up a city, as well as the attractions and advantages. Let us not forget the latter, however, in contemplating the former. _ The accounts of the officials of the city of Lakeland have been audited by the firm of Mucklow & Ford, cer- tified public accountants, of Jack- sonville. Departing from previous custom, the City Council went abroad for an auditor and got the very best that could be found in the State. Neither incompetency nor partiality can possibly be charged in this audit. It is therefore gratifying to state that the result of the investigation showed the Clerk and Treasurer to have 50 cents more than he was charged with; the Collector of Light and \Water revenues, 80 cents over, and the Marshal and Collector $§9 over. In other words the city is $10.30 to the good, and the auditor makes this comment: *“It is with pleasure that we are able to render a report so satisfactory in many ways. The accounts have been kept with an accuracy somewhat unusual in municipal affairs, and we have not discovered one trace of irregularity.” This paper congratulates the peopl® of Lakeland on the honesty and ca- pacity of those who are now han- dling the financial end of the city's business. A REMINISCENCE. Polk county, subject to the Demo- cratic Primaries. If elected I prom- ise to discharge all duties of the office faithtully and to the best of my ability. In the year 1886 the writer was Mayor of Lakeland. A water com- pany sent its representative to Lake- land to obtain a franchise for a water company, a privilege to do business in this town. They pro- posed to have the Council fix the rates for supplying water to the in- habitants, and at the expiration of thirty years the town should have the right to purchase the plant, etc. It was not posed to involve the town in one tent of expense and no one was under any obligation to use the water unless they found it to their interest to do so. As Mayor, 1 insisted on granting the franchise. But the council took a different view of it and refused. Result—the town was set back twenty years in its progress, Now we have some men of means seeking to establish a gas plant here and so far very little interest is man- ifested in it.
