I found straw in four yards, Grain was found in only seven houses out of the fifty-five, and in no place over a peck of it. The food in process of preparation was invariably grens, such as sweet pota- to leaves or carrot tops, a thin, acrid smelling mass of the appearance of stagnant water and about as appe- |8 tizing, only once in a while contain- |8 iug a bit of vegetable of grain. About o one out of every three was eating elm bark which they prepare by re- ducing it to a fine sawdust and then making it into cakes. Whole rows of trees.have thus been stripped of their bark. Of even such sorry food as this only a few have any great amount on hand. Atfer it is gonc they will eat the bark of the willow and mulberry which cause swelling and hasten death. Except for these the countryside is absolutely bare. “To look back upon it, the whole seems like a bad dream. The gloow ot the wretched homes, the whirling 8Low, driven by the bitter wind, ti hungry garrulousness of the old women, the modest shyness of young matrons at suddenly finding themselves in the presence of a for- eign man, little children crying over their pititul food, the dumb agony on the face of the woman whom we had to tell that her husband had Just breathed his last, the dead with mummy faces and claw-like feet— all this is only a small part of the grim tragedy of the famine where two and a halt millions are facing conditions like these.” As rapidly as contributions are re- celved by the American Red Cross they are hurried by cable to the re- liet committee in Shanghai. Up to March 1, $29,000 has been forward- ed. Millions are needed, because the new grain crop In China can not be harvested for three months. Washington. We are especially grateful to Mr. Hetherington for the liberal public- ity given to the enterprise through the Telegram and the News; to May- or Clonts and city officials for cour- tensies granted to ourselves and the Washington party, and to General J. A. Cox and Dr. W. D. Nowlin for cordial addresses at the park in wel- coming and introducing Dr. Wash- ington, We shall be glad of the opportun- ity to show more fully our apprecia- tion by cherfully rendering what- ever service for the public good may be desired of us. W. A. ROCHELLE, A. L. BRUNSON, D. J. SIMPSON, J. H. BROWN, S. H. SAVAGE. | | l A CARD. To Whom it May Concern: Dr. Booker T. Washington's visit to Lakeland was for educational pur- poses, purely. The local committee respected and co-operated with this purpose, and expected to realize from the charged admissions sufficient money to give substantial aid to the colored public school. OQur expecta- tions were disappointed, for by a miscarriage of our arrangements more than half of those admitted to the park (not including public school children, teachers, and invited guests who were granted free admissions) failed to pay anything whatever. The committee who financed the al- fair was made to sustain a loss of more than one hundred and twenty- five dollars.
