MARCH 7, 1912, We Are Pennant Winners| REA UTIFUL FROSTPROOF [Stroller, in Florida Grower.] Not many places in Florida have anything on Frostproof in the way of natural beauty and adaptability for citrus fruit culture. It is located amid the fine lakes of Polk county, on the new line of the railroad from Haines City to Avon Park. Frostproof is an ‘old” country in spite of the fact that up to this year it has never had a railroad connec- tion with the outside world. Its at- tractions were such that the old timers, who knew a good thing when they saw it, looked it over, were sat- isfied and settled there, making their groves that are now paying them big money. There are certainly some splendid cld groves at Frostproof, and the locality seems to have lived up to its name, in that much of the pro- ducing orchards in that section went through the “big breeze.” The trees were quite badly hurt, nearly al! were cut back, but they survived, and are now repaying the owners for their care and faith, It did take some courage to go in- to the backwoods to plant an orchard. And it took courage to stick to it year after year, hauling fruit to Fort Meade, the nearest railroad point, a distance of seventeen miles, at a cos: ol about 20 cents a bhox for trucking alone. All this expense will now he saved, for they have a railroad at their door, are building a new sta- tion, and are expecting one, if not two, up-to-date packing houses, Preacher Carson carly residents ol this section, He has been gone to his reward six years, but two sturdy sons now carry on the extensive orchard interests of the Carson family, besides overseeing other vast property interests in the neighborhood that semed destined to make them rich before they get gray headed. Joe Carson was our guide over the wondertully picturesque country nbput Frostproof. Five miles from the village is one of the finest lakes I have yet seen in Florida. The banks of Crooked Lake rise at times to a height of nearly one hundred feet and the lucky man who brings irto bearing an orange orchard on the country overlooking Crooked Lake will have a property of value and a location for a home that could not be surpassed for beauty in all Florida. I had the pleasure of being invited to ride in a motor boat across this charming lake. While there are a few orchards on the shores, it is largely wild country, covered with very large pine, which in itself is an indication of good citrus land. The lake itself is very irregular in shape, which give rise to the name it bears. The lake is about six miles Jong, averaging one to two miles in width, Here and there are indentions, mak- ing wonderfully fine harbors, and snggesting a snugness from storm and tempest. The shores are larzely sandy, but at times have that weedy appearance that suggests the game black bass, the so-called trout Florida. The trout were not hungry the day we were there, and the only incident to enliven the journey about the lake was the burning of a per- fectly good pair of trousers on th. We tested the frui: and pronounced it good. “You've eaten a navel orgqnge, 1 suppose,” said Joe. 1 replied that I had eaten thousands of them, but never had vet found one in Florida that I call- ed real good. All of the navels that I had hereto- fore seen in Florida had been rough, large, thick-skinned and coarse or- anges with not much besides sweet- ness to recommend them. These navels were small in size, fairly thin skinned, very juicy and altogether gcod. I noted that the grapefruit in this section is very smooth, and while it is almost altogether “russett” it haa a fine appearance. The inate quality is also good, and as none of it had teen shipped up to the time I was there it ought to bring fine prices on the late market. Some of the old was one of the|. Of course the Carsons are not the whole thing in Frostproof, but I did rot make the acquaintance of any other growers, so cannot say any- thing about them except that I con- sider them fortunate in being so we!l situated, 'Now that they have a railroal they will be right in the running. There is some talk of building a central exchange packing |} house at Haines City, to take the fruit of all this fine producing sec- tion along the new railroad, which will include the towns of Hamilton, Lake Wales, Dundee, Frostproof and Avon Park. All are fine for citrus, all have a grand future as citrus fruit producers and for homes for people who can appreciate surround- ings of natural beauty.
