GIRDLE HAS GROWN SMALLER Now Little More Than a Band, With a Fringe or Two to Soften Severity of Effect. 2y The term “girdle” used to suggest rather bulky swathings of folded silk or satin, sometimes brought to a point Ligh up in the middle of the back. We can even remember “girdle forms,” four or five inches wide, poiuted at top and bottom, front and back, which were oice looked on as the cream of style. But the newest velvet gledle of today has bat liitle in corumon with these hall-torgotien outiines, and can be nido with much less trouble, as Wi with a wuch less elaborate foundation. It is, in fact, only a flat, narrow band around the waist, with perhaps a single little fold to soften the severity of the effect. From one side of it hang flat ends, two of them, perhaps a couple of inches wlde, fine ished with a heavy deep siiken fringe of the same color as the velvet. If the dress with which it is to Le worn be of some light and delicate fabric, while the velvet is black, it Is a wise precaution to line these girdle ends cither with white silk or with the fab- ric of the gown, as in swinging with the natural movements of the wear- er's body they must rub against the skirt, There girdle ends can hang any length that one pleases, to suit the ilmes of one'’s gown, but the prettiest ones are those which fall no more than 15 inches for the longer end, the shorter one's fringe coming exactly to the top of thit on the longer one. The slecves of the gown are made plain and long cnough to cover the hands. Above the hands a little easing is placed and a drawstring or rihbon Berves to close the sleeve like the top of a bag, thus keeping little hands snug and warm, It you do not wish to cover the hands, the drawstring can be placed about the wrist and drawn up so it Wil keep the small arms from sud- den chill.
