Hetherington, Editor Lakeland Evening Tele- gram, Dear Sir: The progressive spirit that has prompted you to inaugur- ate a daily paper ought to insure an active campaign for many other things that we need in Lakeland. 1 will be glad to see a little “ginger” injected into the movement for brick streets and sewerage. Some of us have worked for these things a long time and we want action along safe and conservative lines but the time has come for results if we expect to continue to watch Lakeland grow. On the steps next door to the post-office, today we noted a poor old man, evidently un- able to do work of any kind, solic- iting the scant charity of the casual passer-by. We learned his name and found that he has a brother in an adjoining county who is one of its wealthiest and most prosperous «ili-I zens, amply able to care for his un- | fortunate brother without ever miss- ing the mite that would be neces- sary. This gentleman represented his county in the last session of ti¥ Florida Legislature. We trust he did not represent that county’s hen- evolence and humane feeling. I WE HAVE A FEW PORCH ROCKERS LEFT, AND WILL Lakeland is naturally the prettiest little c¢ity in Florida, and it would take only a little effort on the part of her citizens and those in_author-| ity to cause it to make even a far more favorable impression upon vis- itors and strangers than it now does.! This is not the only spot which should receive attention from those who have authority to make improvement. More- over, a Kansas woman. though she cannot vote except at certain kinds of clections, she can hold any office in the State or any county office if she can get the votes. There is no [law that prevents a woman® from being governor of Kansas if she can get encugh people to vote for her, or secretary of State, or attorney gen- eral, or from holding any other State or county office. One is the people who come here for a few days and won't believe what their eyes see and then go away and say that this garden spot of the world is a barren waste and unfit for agricul- tural purposes and as a place of resi- dence. The other is the indolent, worthless and pessimistic man who comes to Florida and after Iu\'osnngl $75 or $100 is disappointed because he finds the lands won't produce crops worth $1,000 an acre without | being properly cultivated.
