Page 10 7 Educator Seeks To Popularize Thinking Habit}; By ALTON L, BLAKESLEE AP Science Reporter BERKELEY, Calif. — The United States must ‘‘make think. | a4 ing popular,” a university presi- dent declared today. Too many Americans have the attitude that having brains is okay but “not very interesting,” said Dr. Lee A. Dubridge, head of the California * Institute of Technology. That is one main reason why not enough students are becoming scientists, at a time when more scientists and engineers are badly needed, he said. The challenge is “to make think- ing popular, to elevate respect for the thoughtful men, the scholars, the intellectual.” “One effect would be to induce more students to take up scientific careers, Dr. Du- bridge-told the American Assn. for the Advancement of Science. “There are plenty of smart kids who do not go into either science or social science or any other in- tellectual field. “They drift off into the hard- ware business so they can take over dad’s store. Worse still, they drift into business or farming be- caue they have never heard of a scholarly career or what it offers or else they have been told—with tragic accuracy—that such careers don’t yield the sort of financial re- THE KEY WEST CITIZEN turn to which every young man would like to become accustomed.” The educator - scientist said pay is getting better for scientists. “We not only need more sci- entists, but at present and for the foreseeable future there are going to be paying jobs for them. Reynold D. Hogle told the crowd of well-wishers who saw the 45,000-ton flattop off here yester- day. The Midway, which has called Norfolk her home port for approx- imately 10 years, is heading for immediate duty with 7th Fleet vessels guarding the Formosa Straits. Coincident with her departure yesterday it was revealed that the carrier Coral Sea will follow her to the West Coast in the spring of 1957, Both carriers eventually will be modified at the Bremerton, Wash., naval shipyard, getting the newly designed canted flight deck as well as steam catapults for launching heavy jet aircraft, The Midway, which carries 3,000 officers and men, will pick up its air arm, Carrier Air Group 1, at Mayport, Fla., on the way to the Pacific. The carrier will report for duty with the 7th Fleet about the middle of February. It will be the heaviest carrier ever to oper- ate in the Pacific. New Lapel Pins Aid Press Corps AUGUSTA, Ga. #—Tension has been building up at President Ei- senhower’s holiday headquarters here ever since the French Nation- al Assembly began debating the crucial question of rearming West- ern Germany. French rejection of the plan would crack free Western unity and possibly send the President back to Washington for emergency consultations. Jim Hagerty, Eisenhower’s press secretary, has relieved some of the tension in the press corps at least by passing out a pocketful of lapel buttons.
