It’s known as the Sports car. For some years now automobile | manufacturers have been design-| ing the family car to the taste of | the lady of the house. But the! sports car is strictly for the boys. | This low, racy and completely | impractical vehicle is sweeping the country, for a good and sound rea- son. It’s a toy for Papa. It is built for speed and splurge, and it’s not big enough to hold the rest of the family. The standard American motor ear of today has become a sort of living room on wheels, deco- rated according to the feminine taste. It comes in ice cream col- ors, is equipped with all kinds of gadgets to make life easier for the woman driver—push-button win- dows, power brakes and steering, automatic shift, air conditioning, built-in bottle warmers and cos- metics cases. Designers have spent millions finding out how to build a car that won’t snag nylons, that’s easy | to step into in a tight skirt, that’s easy to drive while the lady at the | wheel goes window shopping down ; main street. Things having reached this state, something had to be done to test the skill and daring of the male of the species. So along comes the sports car. The first models were imported from Europe, and so intrigued the American male that U.S. manu- facturers were quick to leap into the field.
