Page 14 THE KEY WEST CITIZEN Monday, November 42, 1954 eee Try A ‘Quick Action’ Citizen Classified Ad - Dial 2-5661 or 25662 Administration Sentiment Is Against New Tax Cuts Now By STERLING F. GREEN WASHINGTON ® — Sentiment within the Eisenhower administra- tion appeared today to be running Atrongly against any new tax re- duction next year unless business falters. . High officials of four federal agencies, which presumably will influence the shaping of President Eisenho-ver’s recommendations to Congress’ in January, indicated in interviews: that; a final decision tax policy hinges on business de- velopments of the next several weeks.» But each said the state of gov- ernmeétit finances — a $4,700,000,000 deficit is expected by June 30 — does not justify further business or individual tax cuts, assuming that the economic recovery is still on the upbeat at the turn of the year. This probably means that the administration not only will oppose a further income tax reduction, advocated by a ae the Democrats Whose party con- trol the next Congress, but will take a stand against scheduled reductions in corporate income and excise tax rates. The corporate’ tax rate is due to drop from 52 to 47 per cent on April 1, under present law, Several excise levies, including those on automobiles and gasoline, also are due for reduction next spring. One of the officials interviewed said: “We cannot afford any tax re- duction in 1955. It is a pretty safe guess that the administration will oppose even the scheduled redue- tions.” Another official, pointing to the likelihood of lower federal reve- nues next year, said; “Unless the business situation calls for relief, I cannot see how we can initiate tax cuts.” A third official said: “If we get a strong economic expansion — and this is the prob- ability — it would seem inappro- priate to reduce taxes.”” The fourth hinted that agreement had been reached to defer the tax decision until the end of the year, when ‘economic prospeets may Half-Size Fashion have clarified a lot.” He said he expected the production and job outlook to be healthy enough to do away with the need for new stimulation of the economy through tax relief. As did the others, he asked not to be named. On Capitol Hill, Rep. Daniel A. Reed (R-NY), outgoing chairman of the tax-writing House Ways and Means Committee, predicted last night that the Democrats fail in a drive to revamp the huge tax revision legislation enacted by Congress earlier this year. Reed, who will turn over the committee gavel to Rep. Jere Cooper (D-Tenn) next. January, said, “The American people found out what a Democratic tax revision program means — more taxes, new taxes and higher taxes, | al The American people do not want any more of that kind of tax re-| 10th, A. House and Senate Democrats earlier this year sought without success: to substitute a hike in Personal tax exemptions for a pro- vision in the tax overhaul bill that gave a better tax break to people who get income from stock divi- dends. They made taxes a cam- Paign issue. Democrats have indicated their strategy will be to wait until 1956 sat vara he election year — to for everybody, Seaoies LEGAL NOTICES (CONTINUED) ——— Raise and surface Fifth Street re = edgé of pavement of Mot te end of h/t Bot “ES Oo 01 6 ise jand, Monroe County, Florida, I Scarity existing surface Ir —— and soply fill ma- ill Surface road with bitumin- ous materials and pea rock 22° wide with 2’ shoulders, PROJECT CRD = 29b-55.
