Page 10 Lad In Stolen Plane Eludes Air Force Jets GLADSTONE, Mich. —An 18- year-old Gladstone boy who had “fooled around planes some” yes- terday flew a sleek stolen plane from Grand Rapids to Gladstone, giving several Air Force jets the bird en route. : After landing the single-engine, $26,000 Beechcraft Bonanza at a small airstrip near this Upper Peninsula town, Darryl Spaulding calmly said: “I just wanted to get to Glad- stone in a hurry.” : State police, who arrested ‘him on investigation of at least three charges, including grand larceny, said he told them he intended to fly home for a visit and then pilot the craft to Detroit, where he was scheduled to be inducted into the Army today. 3 The youth’s rush trip of 300 miles weaving along the coastline of Lake Michigan had the Air Force, Civil Aeronautics Authority, state police and civilian pilots dizzy in an air and ground search for several hours, The plane was owned by Lear Inc., a Grand Rapids aircraft in- strument company. A Lear, mechanic at. Kent County Airport said he heard the plane’s engine start but figured Edward F. Conklin, chief pilot for Lear, was in it until it weaved erratically while taxiing for takeoff. Air Force jets intercepted the light plane but Spaulding, with his lower air speed, was able to out- maneuver them, the Air Force said. The jets were forced to turn back because of low fuel supplies. The plane finally was spotted by Fred Sensiea, a private pilot, on a small’ landing strip near Glad- stone, ‘ Spaulding was arrested at his grandmother’s house near Glad- stone. : e : Police said he readily admitted quoted him as saying he had no formal pilot training. He was re-| moved to the Delta County Jail at Escanaba, One Yard Wonder! ONE YARD WONDER! Yes, you can make this stunning fall skirt of just one yard 54-inch fab- ric in ANY size given! BLAKESLEE AP Science Reporter ATLANTIC CITY, NJ. mH — Taking a tuck inside the heart looks promising for overcoming one dangerous kind of heart trou- ble, three surgeons said today. The tucking could narrow a heart valve which became too wide because of rheumatic fever, a big heart killer disease. The wi- dened valve lets blood shoot back- ward into the heart instead of be- ing sent through the body when the heart beats. ; The tucking operation can nar- Tow the valve ring to help the valve close tighter when the heart beats. It is done by cutting away a wedge of the outer wall of the muscular wall of the heart, at the Proper spot. When this opening is pulled together by sewing, the in- ner wall of the heart is crowded or gathered together, to create a tuck or pleat which faces inward and closes over part of the faulty valve, The heart-tuck method was de- scribed to the American College of Surgeons, opening a week-long clinical session here, by Doctors Elliott S. Hurwitt, Paul W. Hof- fert and Ruthven Ferreria, of Montefiore Hospital, New York, From successful tests on ani- mals, the tucking method looks good for overcoming one kind of theumatic heart valve trouble in humans, and is ready for trial in humans, Hurwitt said.
