Conch Power Was Too Much For Bulldogs Revenge Is Sweet For Key West; Cates, Yates And Stickney Shine By JIM cops Citizen Sports Editor The South Broward Bulldogs, who came to town Friday determined to be the second club this season to | konk the Key West Conchs, were buried under a mass THE YARDSTICK FIRST DOWNS YARDS GAINED RUSHING YARDS GAINED PASSING PASSES ATTEMPTED PASSES COMPLETED PASSES INTERCEPTED FUMBLES OWN FUMBLES RECOVERED PENALTIES of power football last night when they gained the dubious honor of being the seventh victim of the season for the high flying locals, The taste of victory over the gridmen out of Holly- wood, Florida, was sweet for the Conchs after a defeat and two frustrating years of battling to ties with the up- staters, This was the game for which the Conchs were waiting. They rose to the occasion, The three thousand fans who braved threatening skies to witness the clash were prepared for a closer ballgame, but when the Conchs un- leashed the full fury of their single wing football machine, there was no holding them for the likes of the Browards. % was a particularly sweet tri- umph for several of the Conch per- formers who tasted the bitter dregs of defeat three years ago in Holly- wood. ‘The forward wall was very sharp last night. Besides showing the way for the Conchs determined ground assault, boys like Frank Hood, Ralph Garcia, Wayne Brantley and John Carbonell, completely stymied the attempts of the Browards to launch anything resembling the offense they have staged in past years. Early in the ballgame, it looked like the Conchs were géing to make KEY WEST SOUTH BROWARD 17 5 475 145 20 13 4 0 2 0 45 a rout of it. They kicked to the Bulldogs who drove to an immediate first down and then were set back by some fine defensive work by Joe Russo. Broward’s Chuck Bradshaw then kicked out of bounds on the Key | West 23. Mike Cates, who turned in a top performance, on the first play from scrimmage for the Conchs drove to a first down there through center. | Red Stickney carried the ball on| the second play around right end} and the result was a 43 yard gain! all the way down to the Broward 25 yard line. On three successive plays, Bill Haney, Cates and Stick- ney moved the pigskin down to the Broward eight yard line for the | third Key West first down. Three plays later, the Conchs| were just inches shy of a touch- down, but Browards Ed Shuler, a thorn in the side of the Conchs throughout the evening made a key tackle on fourth down that de- prived the locals of a touchdown and gave the ball to the Bulldogs. After the Bulldogs had punted out to the 38 and Favors had returned the ball to the 30,-Bill Haney sneak- ed off right tackle down to the 16 and Stickney swept right end to the 14 yard line ag the first quar- ter ended. The second quarter produced | three Key West scores. The Conchs required just two plays to score in 35 seconds of the second period. Stuart Yates, fast becoming one of the most valuable backfield pro- perties the Conchs- possess, extra point and it was 7-0. The Conch forward wall buried | any hope the Bulldogs might have had of moving the ball after they received the kick and Brad- shaw was again forced to punt. He spiralled his boot out of bounds on the Key West 42. Cates picked up a quick first down on two plays and then Red Stickney put the Conchs back into scoring position | with a sweep around left end 28 | yards down to the Broward 16. Cates and Stickney moved the pig- skin down to the four yard line| from where Yates scampered over on an off tackle smash. Stickney ran the point. With two and a half minutes to go in the half, Stickney pulled off an offensive gem when he went all the way from the Broward 44 for a TD. With just five seconds to go in the half, the Conchs were again| knocking at the door to a TD when Stickney’s pass to Yates put the ball on the Broward three yard line. But the half ended before they could cash in on their scoring chance. The third period was scoreless as the Broward defense tighténed up. | They got their dander up and ap-| plied a rough ‘touch to the pro- ceedings, a piece of strategy that cost them two successive costly 15 yard penalties ‘and allowed the Conchs to penetrate to the Bro- jward six yard marker. | Stuart Yates romped over for Key West's fourth. seore on the | first play of the final quarter and | Haney supplied the point to make |the score 28-0. Pint-sized Everett Atwell went 48 yards to a TD to provide the next score for the Conchs. It was | the second such. jaunt for Atwell this year — on the second time jhe had carried the ball on offense. He went off right tackle, hid be- hind his blockers and before the stunned Bulldogs could recover he was standing in the end zone. But a defensive lapse on the en- suing kickoff took some of the ela- tion out of the Conchs when Chick Katler went all the way for a score from his own 17 yard line. The ballgame ended with the Conchs running the clock out on the Bulldog 24 after they had stop- ped a Broward drive on the 11 yard line, We Can't Help the Cost Increase of New Tires — All Major Tire Companies Were Forced to Raise Prices Due to Increased Production Costs...
