With Most Modern Service Available Forty-iive years ago, Juan Calleja established a grocery store at the corner of Elizabeth and Caroline Streets. Tomor- row, he and his son Carlos will celebrate the Grand Opening of their new, modern Food Center. Probably no store in Key West has remained in the same location for such a long period of time. As a mater of fact, there are only one or two other groceries which can compete with Calleja in length of service to Key Westers. Beautiful Building made. First In South Florida Of particular interest to Key Westers is the National Cash Register Change Computator. | Carlos Food Center is the first | store in South Florida to have this new machine—a machine you might have read about re- cently in Time or Business Week magazines. This is the way it works. The sales clerk rings up a custom- er’s purchases in the usual way on the cash register, which creates the regular itemized re- | ceipt familiar to everyone. But then, instead of taking a total, he takes a sub-total and enters the amount of money given him in an “Amount Tendered” key. He then touches the “Change” Key and takes a total. As this takes place, the indi- cator at the top of the register shows the total purchased, the amount tendered, and as a last figure, the amount of change} due the customer. All of these figures also print on the cus-| tomer's receipt, which is now jnot merely a receipt but a com- | plete record of the entire trans-| action. | It's a wonderful piece of |equipment which must be seen | to appreciate! Opening Day Party At the Grand Opening to-| morrow, Carlos will serve free cake, ice cream, coca-cola, and | drinks. All his many custom- Jers are invited to enjoy this |party. This store, located at Caroline and Elizabeth Streets (701 Caroline Street), is one of the oldest in Key West. Orig- inally known as Calleja’s Grocery, it was established in an old frame building over forty- five years ago. Construction of the new building started last summer and in order not to interupt service to his regular customers, Carlos Calleja has been operating out of a small concrete structure next to his home in the center of the block. Juan Calleja, Carlos and his wife and daughter will be on hand to greet old friends and make new ones at the Grand Opening of the Food Center tomorrow. The store has always catered to those who like fine foods. Its nearness to the water- front has also made it popular as a supplier of boat supplies. Shrimpers especially like the service they get through Carlos. Their boats are only in port for a short period and they like to have their orders for food completed as fast as possible. A Grand Opening Party is scheduled for the entire day tomorrow, Friday. Cake, ice cream, Coca-Cola, frankfurters, etc., will be served. Construction Co.
