History, Duties Of |Former Florence Gray Ladies Corps Sawyer Visiting Told At Meeting |Parents Here The regular monthly business meeting of the Gray Lady Corps was held in the Red Cross Recrea- tion Hall at the US Naval Hospital, with Mrs. Albert Leightley presid- ing as chairman. Mrs, Patricia Willard was wel- comed to the local corps as a trans- fer from the Naples, Italy, chap- ter. . Mrs. Selma Washburn, Mrs. Ruth Carey and Mrs. Leila Pace have returned to active duty. The host- esses for the coffee were Mrs. Nancy Mann and Mrs. Edna West- fall. Schedules for the remainder of the year were prepred and plans were discussed for entering the Ar- mistice Day Parade. Also, plans were. made for the monthly brith- day party at the County Old Folks Home at which time Mrs. Edwina Knapp, Mrs. Doris O’Brien and Mrs, Bernadine Warren will be hostesses. The Gray Lady Corps was first organized at Walter Reed Army Hospital in Washington, D. C. in 1918 and received its name from the patients who affectionately re- ferred to its members as “Gray Ladies” because of the color of their uniforms. The Gray Lady Corps of the Key West Chapter had its beginning in June: 1943, There have been classes each year and Gray Ladies have been working in the Naval Hospi- tal since the corps was organized. The Gray Ladies are all volun- teers and recruited through the lo- Mrs. Gerald Naves, of Danbury, Conn., arrived in Key West Mon- day for a visit with her parents. Mrs. Naves is the former Miss Florence Sawyer, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A. Leland Sawyer, 904 Eaton Street. Mrs. Naves plans to remain. in Key West for two weeks visiting with her parents and renewing acquaintances among her many friends here. She will be joined later this week by her husband. The wives welcomed to their cir- cle Mrs. Phyllis Jensen, the new- est addition to the club, who was also the fortunate winner of an at- tractive prize — a varicolored tile hotplate. i The group also sent their heart- jest get-well wishes, and the lun- cheon floral bouquet to Mrs. Lucy Pierce who is now at home after a lengthy illness and prolonged stay at the Naval Hospital. After the luncheon, announce- ments were made by the chair- man, Mrs. S. E. Purcell, concern- ing activities of interest available to the group. The club’s next event, in co-op- eration with the wives of the Fleet Training Unit, will be November 5 Fort Taylor luncheon which the two groups are sponsoring. All the officers wives are invited to concoct an original bonnet — funny, clever, or just pretty — to wear to the luncheon and possibly, to win a prize! Sonar Wives Have Halloween Coffee Meet Wednesday The Fleet Sonar Officers’ Wives club met at Echoasis Wednesday morning at 10:00. There was a good turnout of members for the coffee and in keeping with the season, a Hallo- ween theme was carried out in Pumpkin name tags and table decorations. Mrs. R. A. Dickens, chairman, presided at the business meeting. Minutes of the previous meeting were read by Mrs. F. A. Smith, secretary. For the benefit of new comers, | Mrs. C. W. The queen will be escorted and crowned by Wayne Brantley, hon- orary acting captain of the high school football team. The queen’s attendants and their, escorts: Miss Gail Simpson, who will be escorted by Red Stickney; Gloria Lentz whose escort is Ju- lio Henriquez; Gale Varela es- corted by John Demerritt and Ma- ry Harris who will be escorted by Mike Cates. Miss Harris is taking the place of Miss Pat Patton who was called out of town. Miss Knowles will wear a white gown and her attendants will wear deep pastel dresses. The Halfback Club, sponsors of the affair have plarined a “Dixie” theme for the decorations. Dance will begin at 8:30 p.m. with the coronation planned la- ter in the evening so that patrons can attend the JayVee game be- tween the South Broward junior varsity and the Key West junior varsity. Dress for the affair is optional and John Pritchard’s orchestra will play for the dancing. Friday, October 22 and con- tinue until all gifts are sold. Home cooked food, jewelry, needlework, plants and Christmas cards will be sold. There will be games and prizes for the children. At 5:00 p. m. until 7:00 p. m. supper will be served. Mrs. Harold Campbell gave the final study of Appleby’s “Glory of the Church” and will give a com- plete review of the book at the November meeting. Her outstanding presentations have been an inspiration to all. Reports of chairmen were heard and announcement of the fellow- ship and congregational dinner to be held in November was made. Mrs. Sterling asked that the an- nual meeting be in December a- long with the installation of the new officers for the coming year. The report also said 20 layettes were given to service families; 14 gratuities were granted totaling $763.82; and 55 loans were made amounting to $3,800.80.
