Growth Of Thompson Enterprises Thompson's Hardware was established in the 1920's. It is a natural outgrowth of the various enterprises which have been aimed at keeping Key West prosperous. Old Key Westers are familiar with the individual units which form Thompson Enterprises. Newcomers might be interested in learning about them. There's the ice plant. Without it, Key West could have never become known as a commercial fishing center. There are the fleets of fishing boats which play an important part in our over-all economy though few people realize this fact because primary emphasis is usually placed upon tourists and Navy. All down through the years, Thompson Enterprises has been a dominant factor in the growth of our town.’ During the changing times, it was Thompson’s which provided em- playment with a pineapple factory—a box factory. (now Specializing in cabinet work), a truck transportation system aiter the railroad washed away. Without Thompson Enterprises, Key West could have hardly existed during the rough period of the depression in the ‘30's. And the important part that has always been played by the organization as a whole, has been especially evident in the management of Thompson's Hardware. No other store in town carries a more complete line of necessities for commercial ship owners. No other store offers a greater choice of necessities for the private home- owner or the industrial worker. Nuts, Bolts, Washers That sounds like a crazy heading for a pert of this story—"Nuts, Bolts, Washers.” It isn’t though. Thompson's Hardware offers a complete line of these hard-to-get items. It is a headache to stock thousands of little bolts or screws when calls for them are so infrequent. Mast hardware stores avoid the task. Charles Thompson figures that the good-will engendered by fulfilling custom- ers needs more than off-sets the loss of space and money of stocking this slow-moving merchandise, however.
