LOS ANGELES (P—A strike of 16 engineers has haltel production at two Los Angeles breweries. Officials at the Schlitz and Pabst plants said about 1,100 workers were idled by the walkout yester- day. Only two or three pickets ap- peared at the Schlitz plant in sub- urban Van Nuys and the Pabst plant in Los Angeles, but most of the other workers refused to cross the picket lines. The AFL International Union of Operating Engineers is asking an increase of 27% cents a hour for 16 members of Local 501. The com- paies have offerel 13 cents. The present base pay for the enginers is $2.72'. Th union allowed one man at each plant to keep refrigeration equipment going to prevent spoil- age of beer already made. (7 — A tree planted on the Gettysburg battle- field last month in honor of Presi- dent Eisenhower has been vandal- ized and probably will not survive. Superintendent J. Walter Cole- man of the Gettysburg National Park said the 22-foot northern pine had been chopped with an axe or hatchet. The incident, Coleman said, was one of several acts of vandalism that occurred over the last week- end. The tree was dedicated by tank Corps veterans of World War I and II in honor of the President, who was commander of the tank- ers training grounds at nearby Camp Colt in 1917-1918. Judge Doesn’t Forgive Culprit LAWRENCE, Mass. — The girl he was accused of stabbing 10 times was kinder to Joseph Persechino, 24, of Methuen, than was Judge Charles Fairhurst yes- terday. , The judge was told that Con- stance De Marco, 17, of Lawrence had forgiven Persechino. Judge Fairhurst remarked that was the girl’s ‘own private bus- iness.” He then sentenced Persechino to five months in the House of Cor- rection after his plea of guilty to a charge of assault with a dangerous weapon in wounding Miss De Mar- co after she broke off their ro- mance last June 25.
