I’m getting sick of conflict—tired of fluoridation, weary of criticism of the new fer- ry, bored with complaints about bad streets. Jimminey Crickets! Isn’t there something halfway sociable-like that we can talk about? A couple of weeks ago, a minor controversy flared up in the Peo- ple’s Forum regarding who should be blamed for the apparent murder of a ney-born baby found in the Salt Ponds off of Garrison Bight. I couldn’t help but agree with the writer who accused “Society” of not fulfilling its duty so I hunted up a column which ran in “This Rock” over three years ago. Some of you might remem- ber it. I’m reprinting the orginal because it will show that we've made little headway toward eli- minating the tragic deaths of un- wanted babies. Fate came up with an_ ironic situation. the other day. You've heard of the new-born baby found Of Ours By Bill Gibb ordinances, etc. Our politicians seem to operate on the principle that if enough laws are passed often enough, people cannot help but do right. The average person Probably breaks a dozen laws a day and there is no use develop- ing a guilt complex about the situation. Not one which will lead to murder, at any rate. Transgressions that are serious | should be taken to church leaders who will give understahding sympathy and advice. Ignore the petty humans who have nothing better to do than create gossip, scandal, and what have you. Read Psalm 5: Among the first few lines, you'll find: “Have mercy upon me, O God. . .against thee, thee only have I sinned. . .” Those who are completely ir- religious can be helped perhaps by taking the advice of a pagan, Marcus Aurelius, who said: “I have often wondered how it is that every man loves than all of the rest of men, but yet sets less value on his own opinion of himself than on the opinion of others.” himself more | Comedy Success You don’t have to own a lot of hats to become a big time comedian, but it certainly helps. Take it from Lou Costello, the heavier half of the movie comedy team of Abbott and Costello. who admits that he keeps a collection of more than 300 hats around the | house for emergency use as laughgetters. Abbott and Costello are now | brought to the screen in Universal- | International's “Lost in Alaska,” }opening Tuesday at the Monroe Theatre with Mitzi Green, former child star, and Tom Ewell in co | starring roles. “Funny hats have been the most | coveted ‘props’ of comedians since | show business began.” Lou points }out. “I’ve seen drawings of the old Greek comedies of Aristo- phanes, and the headgear they wore in those days were undoubt- |edly good for plenty of yaks when |they played long runs at the | Acropolis Theatre.” ;. Costello favors his bowler hat in most scenes for “Lost in Alas- ka,” while his laugh partner Ab- bott is seen throughout the zany comedy of the Far North in a |furry parka hood. The rotund comedy star has |; been collecting his hats over a |period of twenty years, dating back to when he was “top banana” in a traveling burlesque show.
