Ed and Bill Murray, Pete Cox, ‘Mac’ McDuffie, and Melvin Cor- mier have crammed my mind with so much electronical informa- tion that I’m afraid this scientific knowledge will make me a marked man for Russian spies. , Truthfully, I’ve learned to appreciate the wonders of modern science. Until Pete Cox demonstrated and explained the uses of electronic testing equipment at Murray’s Electric, I had always looked on such gadgets as being so much “hocus-pocus” designed to impress potential customers. elvin Cormier hooked up the newest tester at Murray’s. It is called an electronic ignition analyzer. If you wish to be tech- nical, you might say it is a Cathode Ray Oscilloscope. This instrument permits the operator to observe the com- plete action of the ignition cir- cuit while the engine is run- ning, and checks concurrently, the individual action of mag- neto, coil, distributor, spark plugs and condenser. A clear picture appears on the cathode ray tube screen which dis- closes infallibly the actual cause and location of ignition and engine faults. Ignorant as I am of mechani- cal matters, I was able to watch this analyzer and clear- ly understand the image of le igniti WEIDENHOFF ANALYZER ab gaagrhn paloligg -” The analyzer tests for defective insulation of rotor arm, dis- tributor head and ignition wires. It also checks condenser condi- tion, poor electrical connections, contact breaker faults including srancrect gap, weak tension spring, ignition coil and spark plug faults. Murray’s Auto Electric is located at 105 Simonton, right next door to the Coca Cola plant. It specializes in engine tune-ups. Included in the shop is a large stock room which affords a com- plete coverage of small engine parts, ignitions, carburetors, exhaust pipes, mufflers, etc. 3 X The authorized sales and service of Briggs-Stratton, Clinton, and Kohler gasoline engines is a substantial part of Murray’s business, also. These are the engines often used on lawn mowers, Dun. small boats. ; lere’s the normal procedure for a routine auto check-up at Murray’s Auto Electric. Right off the bat, a compression check is made and the spark plugs cleaned. The distributor is then led and tested on an electronic device known as the Weidenhoff istrib-U-Scope. This pipribU Beope and most of Murray’s electronic equip- ment is a duplicate of similar machines used at the Aberdeen Proving Grounds for Combat Vehicles. Pete Cox formerly held the same job at the Aberdeen Proving Grounds that he holds here in Key West—foreman. The Distrib-U-Scope measures the cam angle of the distributor. This measurement is based on the number of degrees that the distributor shaft turns while the points are shut. It is the most accurate instrument known for this kind of work. Obsolete methods use a feeler gauge and no two men can usually agree on correct adjustments. : mia After the distributor has been examined, the timing is checked, and final adjustments are made. In the case of a Chevrolet, for instance, these final adjustments include setting the valves. It would require 10 Bewarapee pages to describe even par- tially, the various machines and their use that may be found at Murray's. The most important point to be made clear, according to Pete Cox, is that all of these modern inventions serve one purpose: They take the guess-work out of the mechanical depart- ment and save the customer money by disclosing hidden faults immediately. You‘re not paying for a mechanic's time while he engages in a “hit-or-miss” search — and when his work is completed, the electronic screens will disclose whether has made any mistakes. z ‘ Here is a partial list of ‘“wonder-performing” instruments which are in use constantly at Murray’$ Auto Electric: The Electronic ere Analyzer. The Elecrtonic Pe coe é ‘The Engine Analyzer, (which tells the ratio of gasoline and air that a car burns. It gives the manifold pressure in inches of mercury, measures engine speed and contact dwell, and can be used to test the coil and condenser). c The Fuel System Analyzer, (non-electronic. Ask any of the men in the shop to show you around. gk are Sect devices used to test magnetos, to charge Magnets magnetos, etc. _ Valve jobs are one along with tune-ups and electrical work. Also, front end alignments. Perhaps we shouldn’t close however, without mentioning the fact that Murray’s rebuilds carburetors. It is extremely exacting work—requiring dozens of accurate gauges.
