‘Thureday, August 12, 1954 THE NOTAS CUBANAS Por RAOUL ALPIZAR POYO GL TRADUCTOR Para los que hemos tenido la necesidad en mas de una ocasién, de ganarnos el pan de cada dia, ejerciendo la misién del traductor, no eS una sorpresa el conocer cuan dura, dificil y amarga es tal labor, siempre anénima. Porque cuando algan lector se aburre leyendo lo traducido, nunca piensa que el autor del libro era un mal eseritor, sino que invariablemente atribuye esas faltas, al pobre tra- ductor, que tuvo especial empefio en ajustarse extrictamente a lo escrito por el autor. Por eso cuando pensamos que nuestro Apstol Marti, en mas de una oportunidad, tuvo que ganarse la vida traduciendo, nos damos exacta cuenta del calvario de ese gran hombre, todo elocuencia, todo cultura, al tenerque ajustarse a las raras lucubraciones de otros Ppensadores. Marti, segan cuentan sus pane- giristas, acabadode cumplir los trece afios, intenté traducir nada ménes que HAMLET, la inmortal tragedia del ‘esgritor William Ya en plona juventud y obligado por las cireunstancias, encontran- dose en México, tradujo el bello libro de ‘Vietor Hugo, titulado “Mes file”, Esta dificil traduccién le sirvié para ganarse el favor del publico mexicano y fué publicada en forma de folletin encuadernable, en la “Revista Universal’, comen- zando la publicacién el dia 12 de marzo del afio 1875. Pequefies opusculos y algunos cuentos, fueron también traducidos del franeés, que vieran la luz en diferentes . revistas latino-ameri- canas de la época. Durante su larga permanencia en los Estados Unidos, nuestro insigne Maestro, trabajé en la traduecién de cuatro libros para la famosa casa de Appleton de la ciudad de Nueva York, en cuvas traducciones hizo gala del per- fecto dominio y ejemplar conoci- miento que poseia del idioma in- Alia por el afio de 1882, se dedica a traducir dos interesantes tomitos de Antigdedades .Clasicas, Estos fueron “Antighedades Griegas” por John Pentland Mahaffy y “amigiedades Remanas” original de Augusto Samuel Wilkins. El afio siguiente, en 1883, termi- na la traduccién de“Neciones de Légica”, maravillosa obra escrita por el filésofo y economista Wi- liam Stanley Jovons. Este libro del que decia Marti estaba plagado, pese a su enorme importancia y belleza de estilo de “maravillosas imitiles reglas pueriles”, le sirvié para ¢on el importe obtenido por esa traduccién, pagarle el viaje a su anciano padre hasta Noni Nig y tenerlo algin tiempo a su do. Un poco mas tarde, en el afio 1885 traduce con el nombre de MISTBRIO una novela original escrita en inglés bajo el ‘titulo de “CALLED BACK", por Hugh Con- way, cuyo verdadero nombre era Frederiek John Fargus. El prélogo de esta muy interesante novela, escrito y concebido por el propio Marti. En original pré- logo, dice Marti: “El traductor del libro solo tiene una palabra que decir, en cuanto al lenguaje. Traducir no es, a su juicio, mos- trarse a si propio a costa del autor, sino poner en palabras de la len- gua nativa al autor entero, sin dejar ver en un solo instante la persona propia’. Véase cuanto de anémima tiene la profesién de traductor. Without referring to himself by. pame, the rector wrote of his per- formance: “It was obvious the frustrated ham reading the lines of the doctor was having the time of his life. En al afio de 1887, en el corto espacio de dos meses, realiza Marti la mas conocida y popular de todas sus traducciones y hasta redacta el prdlogo de la famosa | Y muy conocida novela RAMONA, | original de Helen Hunt Jackson, | obra magnifica, escrita para des- eribir de manera admirable y | defender la vida de los indies de California. De ahi, que en el pré- logo Marti adelanta a los lectores: “Todos hall: en RAMONA un placer exqui: mérito literario, color en el artista. animo generoso, leccién al politico, ejemplo a | los amantes y entretenimiento para los aburridos o cansados”. Marti habia anunciado a su gran amigo el escritor uruguayo Enri- que Estrazulas, que iba a prepa- rarse para hacer la traduccién del libro titulado “GENTLEMAN de John Halifax”, cosa esta que no leg a realizar, por habérsolo impedido la gran labor de organi- gacién revolucionaria, que ya se iniciaba y a la que dedicara Marti toda su vida. Tenia la ilusién de publicar, con ilustraciones magnificas, una tra- duccién hecha por él, titulada Lalla Reokh. Esto tampoco Ilegé a realizarlo, La vida de consagra- cion al ideal de independencia de su patria, le sustrajo de todo otro anhelo y para él todo eso nada significé, cuando al final sofiaba con la libertad de Cuba. Un notable escritor y critico literario cubano de estirpe intelec- tual, José de Armas y. Cardenas mas conocido en el mundo de las letras por el pseuddnimo de Justo de Lara, al juzgar la obra de Mar- ti, como .traductor, dijo lo que sigue: “Esa seductora sencilléz de su conversacién priada era la misma que pueden gozar los que leen sus correctas, elegantes y castizas | traducciones”’. | Nosotros, que, como decimos al principio de este trabajo, hemos realizado la labor de traductor en periddicos y revistas alla en Cuba, sabemos de, todas las enormes dificultades con qge tropieza quien realiza tal labor. Sobre todo, noso- | tros actua: nm los grandes rotativos habaneros, teniendo frente a nuestra mesa de trabajo al “teletipe” corriendo incansable y trasmitiendo noticias de todo orden, que tenfamos que seleccio- nar rapidamente para traduirlas y enviarlas, con sus titulos y sub- titulos a la imprenta, porque el periodista moderno y los que tra- ducen para esos grandes diarios, todo tienen que realizarlo: violen- tamente.
