Robin Roberts «Nears 20-Game Winning Mark By BEN PHLEGAR AP Sports Writer Robin Roberts is about ready to knock on that 20-game door again. If he gets inside, he will be the first to do it five seasons in a row since Carl Hubbell was the meal ticket of the New York Giants. The Philadelphia strong boy has been coasting along most of the year on the fringe of the spotlight, yielding the center of the stage to the exciting pennant races. But he’s been winning just the same. When he handcuffed Milwaukee on five hits last night for a 2-1 triumph, he ran his victory total to 16 against 9 losses. Two seasons ago when he won an amazing 28, exactly a dozen of the victories came after Aug. 4. Roberts isn’t quite up to his pace of last year when he won his 19th game on Aug. 4. But the righthander still remembers with dread the rough going he encoun- tered onee he reached 20 in 1953. He ran his record to 20-8 on Aug. 12 but staggered through the last seven weeks of the season with only three more victories. Freddie Fuch’s grounder bounced off George Bar- ber’s chest to load the sacks. Steve Brundo, who followed, bounced to Earl Smith at third for the second out with Rue scoring on the play. However, Lewis got the dangerous Arnold Mcllwain to ground out to retire the side. Key West got its first in the fourth when Smith singled to cen- ter going all around to third when centerfielder Billy Forte let the ball go through him. Mickey Wertz who followed Smith, struck out, but he, too, was safe when. Arnold Mc- Ilwain dropped the third strike.
