BERLIN # — Communist Pre- German Parliament today that West German security chief Otto John has been granted political asylum in the Soviet zone. 7 John disappeared into the East German government has taken the official position that he was kid- naped, probably while drugged, or lured into the Red zone. The East German radio an- nounced last night that Red state security police had rounded up @ “large number” of persons it said had been spying for the West Ger- man and American “secret serv- ices.” That broadcast did not men- tion John by name, but as head of the Bonn government’s internal security service he knew the iden- tities of hundreds of persons send- ing information from East Ger- many to the West. The Soviets in previous broad- casts have claimed that John quit the West to work for German re- unification. Since John disappeared, a man purporting to be him has broad- cast three times from East Ger- | many, saying he went to the East to work for German unity and be- cause “too many Nazis” had re- turned to power in the West Ger- man government. Grotewohl told the lower house Police Guard Army Counsel After Threats BOSTON (#—State and focal po- lice today continued guarding the Walpole, Mass., home and Cape Cod summer retreat of Joseph N. Welch, Army counsel in the recent Army-McCarthy hearings, after word from Washington that an at- tempt might be made to kill him. The armed guard was set up last night after Washington police in- formed Boston authorities that the man was reported by his wife to have left his home in Montgomery County, Maryland, with a German Luger pistol. Police quoted the woman as say- ing her husband has had a grudge against Welch since 1941. Washing- ton police did not say from what ineident, if any, the grudge stemmed, mier Otto Grotewohl told the East /J sector of Berlin July 20. The action, the source said, was “due to an increasing conviction on our Part that John was unreliable.” Other Allied officials in Bonn disclosed today that John was in- volved in a bitter controversy with American and British intelligence officials in Germany before he dis- appeared. John considered Nazi-like ele- ments rather than Communists as the greatest danger to the young West German republic and con- centrated his work on them, the Officials said. He was a member of the anti-Nazi resistance move- ment during the war and a partic- ipant in the 1944 plot against Hit- ler’s life. The stormy love-adventure stars Gloria Grahame, Ceasar Romero and Turhan Bey. “Prisoners of the Cashah” bares the shocking secrets of the fear- haunted Casbah when Miss Gra- ham and Bey are almost victims of court intrigue: They seek sanc- tuary in the Casbah, behind whose impenetrable walls are sealed 10,- 000 secrets and beneath whose sin- darkened streets are buried 1,000 murders. Their pursuer is Ro- mero, a power-hungry official. In the Casbah, they are saved from death in the Court of Thieves when Bey pulls off the greatest crime in Casbah history, the looting of the Emir’s treas- ure.
