Royal 929 Truman Headquarters Avenue Motels, Hotels, Homeowners Assured Of Satisfaction At Altman’s Furniture Company By BILL GIBB “I don’t know what it is,” Hy Altman, of Altman’s Furniture Company, said. “High-pressure salesmanship, misleading adver- tising, the glamor of a big city—any and all of these things are probably responsible for so many Key Westers going out of town to do their shopping! “Truth of the matter is,” Altman continued, “Key West prices are just about the same as any place in the nation. If you or any- one else would like to be convinced of this fact, come into our store and we'll be happy to furnished you with proof. “Food, furniture, automobiles—you name it and I'll show you that for equivalent quality, the sales price of the item re- mains relatively the same—regardless of where it is sold.” Altman isn’t the only merchant who has noticed the tendency of local residents to go to Miami or some other large city for their shopping needs. Businessmen all over town are wondering how to combat this problem which can have nothing but harmful effects upon every Key Wester. Primarily, failure to patronize local business establishments seems to stem from that old saying: “The grass is always greener on the other side of the fence.” Most of us know—if we stop to think about it—that there is no basis for truth in the statement. In this day and age, competition being what it is and nearly all teliable products being controlled by ‘fair-trade’ prices, a poten- tial customer is assured that he will get what he pays for—re- gardiess of where he buys. Cites Advantages Of Local Buying Altman cited many @avantages of local buying. He said: “Ot course, there are many benefits to be derived from patronizing the ‘stores in a person’s own home town. In the long run, these benefits pred amount to savings but it is hard to convince people of this fact. “For instarice, ractitally every person in Key West is de- pendent upon the general prosperity of the town for his own immediate welfare. etimes we have a habit of forgetting that our schools, our streets, our police and fine protection, etc., are financed from taxps placed on local merchants. Pm. parks, good schools, beautiful public beaches—all these things must come from the tax dollar. But taxes have to be levied in portion to the amount of business that a mer- chant does. Key Westers who spend their money at home are bound to get a large portion of it back in the form of local im- provements.” Altman pointed out one fact which is especially important but often over-looked by the out-of-town shopper: IF YOU SHOP OUT OF TOWN, IN MANY CASES WHEN THE MERCANDISE IS DELIVERED, PROBLEMS ARISE THAT NEED TO BECORRECTED. ALWAYS THE LONG DISTANCE BETWEEN BUYER AND SELLER MAKE SUCH ADJUST- MENTS DIFFICULT! Altman’s, Furniture Company Altman's Furniture Company, 900 Duval St,, is one of the larger stores catering to Key Westers. The company has a com- plete line of furniture and furnishings to supply every need. If - an item eer happen to be in stock, Altman’s will secure it for There are bedroom, living room, dining, room suites, occa- sional pieces, tables, lamps, pedis has everything! And the prices are in line with those of any other furniture store in the nation. For instance -. You may be interested i in deeply luxurious sofas or chairs. Altman’s has them—all styles and colors. There are sectional sofas with armless chairs adaptable to any space or idea—de- signed for creating a beautiful, impressive room. are chairs which bring home the true meaning of the word “relaxation”—ror father, for mother, for the children! Trend Toward Casualness One of Altman’s most versatile and useable groups for per- fect, informal living is wrought iron furniture. Today’s trend in home furnishings is toward the casual. Wrought iron lends this effect. It is designed for comfort as well as eye appeal. Altman's also carries a complete line of rattan furniture. Do you wish to add sparkle to your home? You can do it with a proper selection of occasional pieces. There is another bright object which shouldn't be overlooked—beautiful lamps for every room in the house. Rugs, too. Wholesale Contract For Hotels Altman's Furniture Company caters to motels and hotels. Any large establishment may buy its furniture at wholesale contract prices, The store is distributor for Simmons’ bedi and metal furniture; for Mangel’s, relyacse oor rag and many other brand-name furnishings which spell “quality”. Motels and hotels are proud to advertise their furniture as an attraction to guests when they purchase it from Altman's. Loyalty To Our Home Town The most important thing which Altman wishes to stress to readers today is “loyalty to our home-town.” “That's what it is going to take,” he says, “for Key West to develop into a well-integrated, well-adjusted city. If you have any doubts about the ability of local merchants to meet out-of prod pain come by and see me—especially em regard to furni- ture. I think I can convince you otherwise! 7 duly 19, 1954 THE KEY WEST CITIZEN Page ?
