Practical Christianity qs Ti —_— Of Sermon At Ist Baptist Church Summer vacation time, a period usualy marked by a slowing down of,church activities, is being utiliz- ed by the First Baptist Church, Bahama and Eaton Streets, this year for an intensive enlistment campaign. The church program is being stepped up and each service is being aimed at the practical side of church membership with the view of interesting presev« day men and women in becoming af- filiated with the church and ex- erting their time and talents for the spread of the age-old principles of life set down in the Bible. New Testament Principles On Sunday, the Pastor. the Rev. H. H. Link,’ will deliver two ser- mons pointed toward the practical application of Christianity. At the 10:50 a.m. hour, the Rev. Link will discuss ‘Translating New Testament Principles into Present , Day Practice.” In discussing his subjects, the Pastor said: ‘‘There are’ many people today who consider the great principles laid down in the New Testament as high ideals ap- plicable only to times gone by. “The people of today need to re- alize that the principles laid down in God’s Word are equally applica- ble to our modern every day liv- ing as they were to the early Christian Churches.” ‘ Evening Subject At the evening service, 7:30 p.m., the subject will be ‘Translating Creeds into Deeds.” “Many of our present day churches,” the Rev. Mr. Link said, “set up elaborate creeds for the government of the conduct of the membership of their groups but because of their high ideals are read and not acted upon.” In discussing the application of his messages to the modern day world the Baptist pastor said: “If there ever was a time when Christian .people should translate the great principles of the Bible into their every day lives, it is ow. Christianity vs. Communism “There is not room enough in our’ world for/ both Christianity and Communism and Christianity has the powet to overcome the tide of Commwism which is seek- ing to envel@ the entire world. “The practcal every day liv- ing of Chrisfianity will do much to not only ¢rengthen the position of the churches but to bring those who do nof now. embrace Christ- ianity to A realization that the hope of lies in the Power of God through His people and His qurch toward a solution of world frofilems.” The pastor extended an invita- tion to my who are not now re- gular clurch attendants, as well as all Jantists in the city, to at- tend Sjaday’s services, Gens Of Thought 1 KINDNESS Wiirever there is a human be- ing fere is an opportunity for kindess —Seneca Kidness gives birth to kind- nesi —Sophocles. LETS ALL GO TO CHURCH CHRISTIAN SCIENCE SOCIETY 327 ELIZABETH STREET Sunday School, 11:00 A.M, Nursery for Pre-Sunday School Age Sunday Morning Service at 11:00 o’Clock Wednesday Evening Meetings at 8 o’Clock Reading Room in the Church Building is open on raeesey and Friday evenings from Saturday, July 17, 1954 THE )JOHN 8:32—"*And yoe will know the truth and the truth will make you free.’’ (RSV) \e This text seems to me, not only a promise but challenge. Under the influence of know truth and have been freed from the supersitions and fictions about life thus being released for for, ward steps toward freedom. Our day is confused by the partial rruths seeking” our minds and loyalties. nature is leveled at us continually. Our need is for truth. If only all people could have the whole truth concerning issues over which our world is struggling some real hope for solution could be cherished. Since truth does make men free, Christians are challenged by this text to accept as final nothing less. This will free us from the fictions that divide and frustrate life. - This challenge is particularly clear in racial and religious consideration. Christians are under obli- gation to reserve judgment until they know the truth about persons, people and situations. Fellowship Supper Highlight Of Next Week At Ley Memorial Christian Science ‘The highlights of the program next week at Ley Memorial Meth- odist Church will be the covered- dish fellowship supper to be held at 7:00 o’clock Wednesday. This is an all-church affair which means that all the members and friends of the Church are in- vited. The fellowship supper next week will be the twenty-first in a series which began in November, 1952. At the time the series was inaug- urated no one would have predict- ed that it would continue in season and out of season. But now’ the monthly fellowship supper has»be- come a permanent part ef the program of Ley Memorial Church. Method Described Here is how it works. Hostesses —usually two—are , chosen at a given supper to serve at the next month’s affair. Their task is to provide the niceties, bread ‘and butter, and table arrangements. Those who attend the supper bring along their favorite food dish, eating utensils — plates, « silver- ware, cups and saucers, eto., and the whole family. Varied Programs The program is always simple and not too long. The main fea- ture is always the supper. The food is served buffet style prompt- ly at 7:00 o’clock. Following the supper there is usually a peroid of play-party games, or maybe a movie, and the planned part of the program is over by eight-thirty. The sermon at the 10:50 morn- ing worship hour tomorrow will bring to a close a series of five sermons based on the Epistle of Paul the Apostles to the Romans. The subject of the concluding ser- mon will be, “Ethics For Today.” CHURCH OF JESUS CHRIST Of Latter Day Saints SUNDAY SCHOOL 10:00 A.M.
