[General Tells Of Reds’ Far East Air Power Babbling Brooks Are Cut Off When Water Leak Is Stopped GRAND VIEW, N.Y. —Roland A. Wood bought a house here about two years ago but before he moved in a full-fledged stream began flowing right through the cellar. A landscape architect diverted the stream south of the house, through the garden. Soon after that, Wood decided that little bridges, stepping stones and other aquatic embellishments would help his enjoyment of the tree-shaded brook. And so, the “House With Two Brooks” became a landmark and even a pride of this suburbaa com- munity northwest of New York However, while Wood, an actor, was on a summer theater tour, men working on a New York thru- way bridge nearby broke a water main Wednesday and the Spring Valley Water and Supply Co. rushed in repair apparatus. While they were at it, they dis- covered a heretofore unknown Teak. So they shut off the water for a few hours to repair it. Just then, astonished neighbors saw the two brooks on Wood’s property disappear. Soon they were completely dry. All that was left were bridges, stepping stones and all these things that used to help Wood enjoy he brooks, Water company officials said the streams “definitely came from our pipes,” and even dared to estimate them as flowing at 18 to 20 gallons a minute. As if beauty were mea- surable! Wood is expected home from his | tour Saturday. Criticism Leads To Resignation MEXICO CITY (#—The director of Mexico’s Fine Arts Institute re- signed last night following criti- cism that he let the funeral of Diego Rivera’s wife be turned into a Communist demonstration. Frida Kahlo, the 44-year-old wife of the leftist painter, was found dead in bed Tuesday morning. Be- fore the funeral her coffin, draped with the Communist flag, lay in state in the Fine Arts Institute. Citing this, the minority Mexi- can National party said in a state- ment yesterday that the institute director, Dr. Andres Iduarte, should be fired. Several hours later the institute issued a statement saying Iduarte had resigned. Suspense Film Due At Strand “Dial M For Murder,” the widely heralded, new Alfred Hitchcock picture starring Ray Milland, Grace Kelly and Robert Cum- mings, opens Sunday at the Strand Theatre. Filmed by Warner Bros. from the international stage success which ran a year and a half on Broadway, “Dial M For Murder” will be presented in 3-D and Warn- erColor. Suspense and mystery are the elements which are reportedly mixed with dangerous romance in the story of a three-cornered love affair which leads to murder. Ray Milland is Tony Wendice, married to lovely Grace Kelly, new Holly- wood star. The role, as portrayed on the stage was one which requir- ed a dramatic sense of calculated evil and appealing suavity. Mil- land, long a favorite in Hollywood and winner of an Academy Award “Oscar,”” is said to reach new heights of dramatic achievement in his portrayal. Grace Kelly, blonde, beautiful and urbane, will be remembered for her outstanding characteriza- tions in ‘High Noon” and “Mo- gambo,” for which she won an Academy nomination. In “Dial M For Murder” Miss Kelly has | been elevated to star status by| producer-director Alfred Hitch-| cock, As Milland’s wife she is the central figure in the famous strang- ulation scene which results in the| all-important murder in the story. Third member of the stellear triangle is Robert Cummings, no longer the brash young man of comedy roles, but now a serious- minded lover, determined to save | Miss Kelly from an innocent death. Alfred Hitchcock, whose fame was won through his taut direc- tion of such outstanding films as “The Spiral Staircase,” “Stran- gers on a train,” and most re- cently, “I Confess,” is said to have filmed “Dial M For Murder” in a faithful reproduction of the inter- national stage hit while adding only the distinctive Hitchcock di- rectorial touches. One such fam- iliar trademark is the appearance in the film of the famed director’s portly person. But in “Dial M For Murder” he does not appear in a “ive” scene. He is seen as one member of a group in a photo- graph of a class reunion which als shows the murder victim. Heat Got Him | ANDERSON, S.C. The cooler air extended from Kansas and Oklahoma eastward over Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky and Ohio to the North Atlantic coastal states. Daytime temperatures in that area yester- day were 10 to 25 degrees cooler than on the preceding day. Temperatures in the 90s and 100s still covered most of the southern half of the nation, with Little Rock, Ark., recording 107. Fort Worth, Tex., and Springfield, Mo., reported 102. But the temperature reached a high yesterday of only 92 in St. Louis compared with 113 the pre- ceding day. More than a week of ; Scorching heat was blamed for 46 deaths in St. Louis. Kansas City fell from a high of 112 Wednesday to 93 yesterday and New York City airport from 99 to 84. Missouri was hardest hit by the heat wave, counting 60 deaths. ARGUMENT ON CREED LEADS TO SLAYING SEATTLE ( — For 30 years, Marko ‘Biondic, 66, and John Bosikovic, 61, had argued heatedly about their respective religions— Roman Catholic and Greek Ortho- dox.
