5E Page 8 Russia Urges 7 Its People To Act Normal © By WILLIAM L. RYAN AP Foreign News Analyst ‘The Russians have unveiled 2 mew weapon in the cold waf, It is the normal look. ‘Trapped in a monumental bur- @aucracy, the Soviets are attempt- ing to convince the world that they are just as esc as anybody else, if not more so. Outside the borders they have had some success. Their cultural offensive has prospered. Dozens of Soviet writers, artists and athletes have sallied forth—under unobtru- sive surveillance—to spread the word that the Soviet Union's reg- ime’ is interested only in making the world one big, happy family. In turn, the Russians have off the welcome mat for many a tourist from abroad. The Russians have pulled the Tug from under writers and ‘scien- tists who in Stalin’s day flourished by toadying to his pet fetishes. It is now proper for a Russian scien- tist to speak respectfully of Albert Einstein’s relativity fheory and Darwin’s theories of evolution. Trofim Lysenko, the biologist who made himself a feared scientific dictator by hewing strictly to the Stalin line, now is in semidisgrace. All this—and much more of the same—is good Russian propaganda abroad. In such a background, Rus- sian arguments become more per- suasive, Russian protestations of peaceful coexistence become more convincing. . Internally, Russia’s social devel- opment is struggling toward the point passed by “Western nations somewhere in the Victorian era. A victorian morality—quite alien to robust Russians—is being im- posed from on high, The ruling Communist regime is attempting the impossible in try-| * ing to persuade ‘Russians to avoid alcoholic stimulants — the same stimulants downed with such vigor by the big shots. The ordinary Ivan is just as fond of his Vodka as —, is. e controlled press is crying horror at the morals of youth. Teen-agers, spoiled brats whose Communist: party parents give them too much money, are drink- ing, smoking, swearing and helling their way through life, avoiding work, becoming snobs, marrying for money, following fads, chasing girls, and doing all the things gild- ed youth it have done in 1880 London The official press expresses con- cern for the sanctity of the home. Divorces are harder to get. Only recently young Communists were instructed in their official journal that jealousy no longer is to be regarded as a “‘bourgeois survival” but a proper emotion for the new Soviet man protecting his happi- mess. All this may serve to convince some in the outside world that Rus- sia is becoming more normal. But at home people must be confused. “Thinker” Has New Campaign DETROIT W—The mayor of suburban Dearborn, Orville Hub- bard, who set his assistants to a special ‘“‘think” period every morning, has applied for the job of Detroit auditor general. Hubbard said that the Detroit ag is more than double his subur- Pay, and: “I only plan to work 10 years ‘@nyway so it works in beautifully with my plans and I won’t have to be re-elected every two years.” A.F. GROWTH TOLD HOLLYWOOD (#—The growth of the world’s mightiest air force, as told by the late Gen. H. H. (Hap) Amold in his book, “Global Mis- sion,” will be made into a motion mounced yesterday.
