* owntown Corner Sells For $100,000. 44-by-100 Foot Lot At Duval And Fleming Changes Hands One of the biggest real estate sales in Key West in recent years was consummated Thursday after two months of negotiations. It was the sale of the northeast corner of Duval and Fleming Streets. According to the tax stamps on the deed, which is on file in the office of the county clerk, the sale price was $100,000. aR OE 6 ta Aa aa The 44-by-100 foot lot was sold by four Havana resi- dents—Manuel Quevedo y Juareguizar, president of Aerovias Q, and his wife, Mercedes Carrillo de Que- vedo, and Angel Aixala y Roig, treasurer of the airline, and his wife, Sara Pertierra de Aixala. Mrs. Doris L, Frank, of Scars- dale, N. Y., was the buyer. The fact that she is the daugh- ter of a Mr. Lane, a man high in the executive circle of the Lerner chain of dress shops, gave rise to the rumor here that Lerner’s was considering opening an outlet here. Representative Confers Another fact which spurred the rumor was the presence here of a Lerner representative who con- ferred with-a local contractor on estimates for different types of buildings for the site. It was also learned that Mrs. Frank is interested in buying ad- joining land on Fleming Street. The lot that was sold runs 4 on Duval Street and 100 feet ‘eming Street. Mrs. Frank to be interested next 47 feet on Flem- negotiati sides, Aerovias Q had intended to build a ticket office on the cor- ner. With that in mind, the old frame building that stood there for years was demolished. Plans Changed However, conditions changed in Cuba and the plan for the office building was abandoned.. Rather than tie up the city’s choice commercial site, the Aerovias Q executives decided to sell the property. Considering taxes, interest, car- tying charges, the selling cost, insurance and other expenses, the Cubans sold the land for just about ey amount they had invested it. The negotiations for the land lasted two months and involved the services of three brokerage firms and two attorneys. Brokers Involved The brokers were Francis A. Calhoun, of the Miami firm of Neumann, Birk and Calhoun; Mitchell R. Basker of New York City; and Vesey A, Johnson of Key West. The attorneys were Norman A. Zarate Purchases Sea Shell Motel For $50,000 Blas Zarate, Key Wester, bought the Sea Shell Motel at South and William Streets fer $50,000, according to the tax stamps on the deed on file at the county court house. The seller was Jose J. Fig- ueroa, who in turn leased the motel from Zarate and will continue to manage it, accord- ing to Julius F. Stone, Jr., who handled the deal. Zarate assumed the mort- gage held by the Gulf Life In- surance Co. The motel, with about 30 PHONE 2-553] rooms, is on a 100-by-100 foot plot that is two blocks from the South Beach area.
