Monday, dune 7, 1954 "THE KEY WEST CITIZEN Core Calls For GOP Decision On Policy Toward S.E. Asia By JACK BELL: - - WASHINGTON 9 — Sen. Gore HOLLYWOOD NOTES By BOB THOMAS HOLLYWOOD (—a Protestant minister is gambling his life eacn- ings on the chance that movie audi- ences will go for a film biography of Jesus exactly as it was told in the Bible. The man who is taking the gamble is Dr. James K. Friedrich, a curious combination of church- man and film producer. A priest of the iscopal Church, he is also Sieg of Cathedral Films, which has made 55. movies for showings in churches. H Dr. Friedrich, who is equally at home in the language of the pulpit and the sound stage, -is-spending half a million dollars, most of it from his own holdings, on ‘a spec- tacle called “Day of Triumph.” It will tell the story of Christ from is baptism through the Resurrec- ion, “I’ve put in everything I’ve got, ineluding a mortgage on my insur- ance,” the producer said. “But T’ve done it before.” ‘That was. in 1938, when he first started in~ the movie. business. When he’ was in a seminary in Virginia; hé was amazed at the drama of the life of St.Paul. He never wealized that the Bible could be so exciting, and he vowed to bring the dramatic power of the Scriptures to the public. After graudation, he arranged an assign- ment as a church assistant in Hollywood and produced his first picture, “The Great Command- ment.” The film was bought by 20th Century-Fex. Dr. Friedrich used the profits to set up Cathedral Films. Among his films was a serial on the life of Paul. Inspired partly by the commer- cial success of ‘Martin Luther,” Dr. Friedrich decided to go ahead with the life of Christ. One of the first problems was finding a suit- able actor. One named Robert Wilson was in his agent’s office when the call came in for some- ore who could play Jesus. Wilson volunteered. He had been brought up in church sutroundings, his father being a minister of a fundamentalist sect. The family had frowned on his ambitions to become .an actor. He recalled that his mother had finally relented, Saying: “Perhaps someday you may be able to play the greatest role of all.” Ava To Divorce HOLLYWOOD w — Ava Gard- ner’s studio says she plans to leave within a few weeks to establish Nevada residence at Lake Tahoe for a divorce from Frank Sinatra. Six weeks residence is required for a Nevada decree. The crooner has declined com- ment and she has dodged ques- jtions about any future romantic plans. She returned recently from several months in Europe. They married in 1951. WASHINGTON (% — Civil de- fense planners are assuming that radar networks will be extended during the next year to give this country at least an hour’s advance warning of aerial attack. The Federal Civil Defense Ad- " ministration revealed this yester-| fm : day in releasing the assumptions on which it will base its planning during the coming 12 months. With an hour’s warning, FCDA said, people in concentrated parts of target areas could be moved »;at least two miles toward the sub- urbs. While this would not elimi- nate casualties, the agency esti- mated “‘the casualty total would still be considerably less’ than if no dispersal were attempted. ‘It also is assuming “that any city attacked, with very few ex- ceptions, would be substantially destroyed.” FCDA emphasized that the as- sumptions, prepared periodically to aid planning, ‘“‘do not predict such an attack.” The assumptions are based on known or estimated Russian capabilities. India’s Entry Into Defense Pact Possible WASHINGTON (# — America’s ambassador to India, George V. Allen, said today that country might undertake a defense alliance with its neighbors provided .it. felt Asians were taking the lead. Allen, former envoy in such dip- lomatic hot spots as Iran’ and Yu- go slavia, ‘stressed India’s strong feeling of nationalism time and again in a copyrighted interview in the weekly magazine U.
