SOCIETY — PERSONALS — NE ITEMS OF INTEREST TQ EVERYONE SUE JONES, Editor Tuesday, June 1, 1954 Have sure miissed you all. Mean that. Yours truly had a nice week- end, Church service was very good. Was distracted momentarily by the pile of pale silver termite wings under the pew. Started musing on the life of the little wood-eating beastie. Couldn’t help thinking that the act of devout worship accomplishes the complete riddance of the ter- mites of worry, anxiety and tension which accumulate for all of us. And so, by the side of the stack of * real wings—yours truly put anoth- er group of sheddings—problems and in so doing, left church with an humble gratefulness for all the good, and a tolerance and regret for the bad. And now that the spirit is renew- ed in strength and serenity—shall we stroll leisurely about Our Town —perhaps to make a few pur- chases, eh? : Pee As we were just told, over at the Gift House (which is this way «+ /.. from the post office) the one time a woman's work is NEVER done is when she starts changing the furniture around. And around. And around. Seems Gift House plans were merely to knock out a wall-merely—and in- stall new lighting—for pure shop- ping pleasure. < Well, that’s been done and the Gift House looks terrific—and with recent stock switched around and brand new stock all ever the place, you'll get a real shopping charge, catty (or kitty?) cornered from the P. Q. ‘these days. What with the lights om and paint flying ‘till all hours, yours truly picked up its bustle and visited the Gift House, And sit- ting on the sidelines—lazy me)— looked around and here are SOME of the “news-items, of course— “The Miracle Beverage Set”— those wonderful Tervis turgblers —y‘know the double barrelled ones that keep drinks forever cold—they’re decorated between the. “walls’* with fishnet — and now, for you all who like “short” ones—they have this magic glass in the double old fashioned size! Thas all I’m gonna tell you to- day—MORE ON MANY NEW THINGS at the Gift House TO- MORROW! The whole town seems to be talking about the tragedy of Jackie and Chiquita. Discussed the nervous moment— which came as a complete surprise to all, except possibly Chiquita-- with Margaret Tallon and “Biddy Shaw”. Found out that Momma C. is doing rather poorly and the great danger lies in the possibilty of her catching pneumonia. Learn- ed also that even a mango (yes, from Overseas Fruit Market) won’t tempt her. She is very listless and | pathetic. However, everyone is standing by—her morale is improving—the tarapulin is over the cage—Poppa J, is pacing about—and commun- iques. will be forthcoming. Here’s hoping dear Chiquita rallies as the kids do enjoy the monkeys at the Aquarium! Sa wes FATHER, dear FATHER! don't come home now—go by Coral Keys Office Supplies, 126 Du Street and select a beautiful, long-lasting, practical, satisfying SCHAEFFER INK PEN! That's right, Dad —just pick it out—try it out and your very own ever loving family will pay for it and Coral Keys will MON- OGRAM IT FREE! dee B= 228 Didn’t quite know what to ex- pect, but gathered a bunch of Joan’s Chums and went down to the Aquarium on a rainy Sunday afternoon to see Jackie and Chiqui- ta, the Rhesus monkeys—No, they weren’t riding on the back of a turtle, but had their own gage not too far from the Aquarium, ‘and there is now a sign telling of the above sad event, and asking coop- eration in not “monkeying: with the monkeys” as Chiquita is quite ill, and Jackie her husband is can- tankerous because of his grief. SsSS28 Drat that dingy kitchen floor! Scrub and scrub and wax and wax and it looks frightful! Well, Lady Housewife—a trip and a Ken-Kit will turn your woe to joy. And, she'll probably strangle me with my Red Shawl for telling of it—but it’s too good to keep! The Jones family in addition to three gals—have two Greyhounds (dogs, not buses). The other morning both of them got out and there was a hue and cry about the garbage cans. Suzy went out—first to see what was going on and secondly, when one of them whipped by at four bells and a jingle and our Society Editor was knocked flat! She is still feeling the after- effects of a devastated derriere— shock and bruises and_ stiffness. Anybody wanna buy the dogs— am sure Suzzy would sell! Even though Win-is real impressed and enthusiastic at the running speed of the greyhounds — never knew they could go so fast! ss S565 Only a picture can capture the intangible ectasy of the lovely bride. Semmes Had pleasant time chatting with Martha and Bob Sauer Sunday evening at Floy and Jack Thomp- son’s, Bless them—they asked me to stay for supper and it was migh- ty good. Also, saw the most original trick for a centerpiece—or just flowers in the house. Pick oleander, fran- gipani, or clarissa blooms and scat- ter strategically on a fern or any other green house plant (not the large leafed variety, though). My friend Floy is famous for her beautiful and original floral ar- rangements, but she says Otila dis- covered this novel and easy way of fixing fresh posies! Oh yes, the blossoms stay “put.” Bs Sze “'Debonaire”, “Mobilaire” and “Riviera” does not mean that yours truly has been to a fash- ion show, unless you consider that the electric fans by Westing- house at the J. R. Stowers Co., 533 Duval are really the latest “'models"—and they are! Also, there is the Westinghouse “de luxe’ window fan which is a |, double duty “’Snap- In” and “Snap-Out’. Thas what 1 said—stick it in the window at night, for cool, cool summer sleeping and when the sun is ever the yardarm—you can use it anywhere in the house. Also, it has a tricky ar | by you can cl when the fan isn’t on. You can be SURE if it’s West- inghouse and be assured of re- lief from the heat with a fan from—J. R. Stowers Co. Think of the sizzling summer days which are slithering up on us and go straight to Stowers for a fan. Pay by the lay-away plan and you'll be mighty glad you did. 22a: == Alice Bancells, Elena Sawyer, Shirley Albury, Cleo Rosam, Nell Reese, Alice Rodriguez, Edna Al- bury, Betty Wilson, Lorraine Key, and Mary Smith sure surprised Sonia Lane the other evening with a “spinister dinner” at the A and B Lobster House. Ss [28 Sure enjoyed chatting with George and Lil Stone who are now managing — and so won- derfully that beautiful dining place — the A and B Lobster House, 700 Front Street. Was a fan of his from his very first bout and also happened to visit Michigan State when he was at the top. Needless to say, he was idolized there, as he had just received his master’s degree from the University, As many of you know, his fame was based on his TV appeal and yours truly believes that he was such a success because so many fans admired his brains and it was readily apparent that he was “thinking” his fights as well as| punching the other guy, | Unfortunately another favorite of | mine — Kid. The 3,000 delegates here represent some 11 million mem- bers in the United States and 42 foreign aks Banal begi ry. Some of the leaders said in inter- views they expect to come up with answers to those problems. On the international scene, Mrs. Zaio Woodford Schroeder of Grosse Point, Mich., sees women “adding a sense of balance in solving those problems.” “They won't straighten out the international situation any more than men,” Mrs. ler em- phasizes. “‘But women are biologi- cally pacifists and they can con- tribute important influences on the world problems.” Mrs. Schroeder, chairman of the federation’s Department on Inter- national Affairs, said, ‘Women are numerically the majority and are oes very eager to assume “Southerners will meet the prob- lem in their own way,” said Mrs. Chester E. Martin of Atlanta, Ga. “Time will take care of the prob- lem,” she added in reference to _ Supreme Court’s ruling out- aoe pegesires “We must bring leaders of the foreign-born populations into the || federation,” Mrs. Harold Milligan of New York City said. She de- clared big cities have been dodg- ing the problem too long.
