Motel Owner Announces Plans For $50,000 Fresh Water Swimming Pool Gunite Method Will Be Used In Construction, Levitt Says A fresh-water swimming pool and all the trimmings will be built at the Marine Work starts April 15. Motel, 1325 Simonton Street. Melvin Levitt, owner of the motel, today said it will be the first fresh water pool for civilian use in the city. The pool, filter system, patios and landscaping will set him back about $50,000 Construction of the pool will mark another first for Key West, Levitt added. He said it will be the first time here that a pool has been constructed by the Gunite method. In this construction method, lic- ensed by the Paddock Poo] and Equipment Co., the concrete is ap- plied to the walls and bottom pneu- matically. The new Marine Motel pool will be 16-by-36 feet and eight feet deep. There will be a five-foot deck on each side of the pool with a patio at each end. On the west end will be a 10- by-26 foot patio and a 20-by-26 No Forms Needed The gunite method of applying concrete requires no forms and the deep end of the Pool beneath the diving board. THE KEY WEST CITIZEN , Levitt said. with the pool will change the en- tire contents of the pool every eight hours, using the water over and over. Ot course, Levitt point- ed out, it will be necessary to add some new water. Sanitary Aspects The filter unit, pl:s an automa- tic clorination unit and an under- water suction cleaner, will keep the | pool clean and control bacteria, algae and fungi. According to the Paddock Com- pany, the average domestic water supply is not clear enough for swimming pool use until it has been filtered. And even the clearest water, the company says, becomes opaque af- | ter a few days use. The clear water as a result of! the filter system plus a special interior finish will make the wa- ter in the pool appear a brilliant turquoise blue. The finish — called Silicite by the company — is a pure white Plaster that is applied over the in- terior of the pool. Levitt said workmen will start digging for the pool on April 15 and estimate that it will take 30} days to complete the job. The pool will be elevated two feet above the ground level, This elevation, Levitt said, will keep surface water out of the pool and also keep out much of the leav- be blown into the pool by the wind. Humility Of course, the answer to all of these problems lies in the keyword, humility. “Humility is a virtue all preach, none practice, and yet, everybody is content to hear.” It might be added that no one seems to really understand what is meant by the term, either. For several years I’ve met oc- casionally with a group of men and women who are quite sincerely de- voted to the achievement of humi- lity. You might think that because they all have this singleness of pur- pose, they would find it fairly easy to achieve a common definition of the word. THE SAME FRIENDLY, Of Ours I've got a feeling that it is one of the conditions that is a requisite to faith but, whereas faith has a tenflency to cling to one, humility has fluid, quicksilver qualities that make it hard to hold on to. We only have to go as far as the nearest mirror to observe a man or woman who has experienced the unstable character of humility and often suffered as a result of it. Luckily, nature has a leveling off process so that most of us who balloon ourselves into a strato- sphere of self-conceit are prompt- ly brought back to earth by our friends and companions. A few unlucky souls continue to float freely until they run headlong into , tragedy. -Everything considered, lack of humility isn’t something for which we should condemn another Person but rather, he should be pitied. And we might take his con- duct as a warning to make a per- sonal inventory of our own thoughts and actions! Hey — Wake Up! The sermon is over now. Some- times it amazes me how “This Rock of Ours” goes off on a tan. gent and starts trying to compete with the preachers in Key West. It’s a foolish attempt because the church leaders dish their advice out “for free.’ Even if all other things were equal, no sensible reader wants to pay a nickle for some- thing that is given away for noth- ing on Sunday.
