ITS PRO FITABLE TO ch 22, 1954 Hal Boyle Says By EDDY GILMORE (For Hal Boyle) NEW YORK #—One of the most articulate men in America is a banjo player who never got be- yond the eighth grade. His name is Eddie Condon (born Albert Edward Condon), a high priest of pure jazz, who has a consistency akin to the late Babe Ruth’s. The Babe never threw to a wrong base. Eddie never played @ wrong chord. After an honest start on the ban- Je, Condon has come down to the guitar and he’s one of the best in the business. He’s a man not given to bragging. The only self praise I ever heard him indulge in was the remark, “I’ve never played a solo in my life.” It’s Eddie’s articulation with words, not music, that fascinates so many of his listeners and friends. Consider his comment on an eminent French music critic who denounced American jazz. “Who does that frog think he is,” asked Eddie, “to come over here and try to tell us bow to play? We don’t go over there and tell them how to jump on a grape.” That is typical of Eddie. I was talking to him the other night about a mutual friend who, although he’d never been south of South Chicago, suddenly developed avery strong case of South mouth. “He’s really got a Southern ac- eent,” I said, “He certainly has,” commented “Ballerina Mice” Aid In Cancer Research Work By FRANK CAREY AP Science Reporter BAR HARBOR, Maine #—Mice that do a ballet step are the latest aides in the war on cancer. Dr. Margaret Dickie today de- scribed discovery of a variety of mice that “pirouette” continually, just like a ballerina. And she said that studi¢d -bf this “ballerina mouse” not only bffered opportunities for probing the cause of cancer but also s neuro- muscular diseases as multiple eclerosis, Dr. Dickie, of the Ja m Me- morial Cancer Researc§® Labora: tory here, told about ityat a con- ference with reporters {Making a nationwide tour of Tesearch proj- ects sponsored by the ‘American Cancer Society. . Movies of the “ballerina mice” show them in real form: The mice constantly, twirl or “pirouette” in contrast to the normal motion of a mouse, which ts back and forth. Dr. Dickie indicated that the study of this unusual motion might help determine what differentiates the normal cell from the malig- mant one, as in cancer. Scientists of the Jackson labora- tory told reporters that a million mice are bred there each year for various purposes, and that these constitute about three fourths of all the mice used in cancer fesearch throughout the nation. France has 1,437,000 more wo- men and girls than men and boys 22,216,000 compared to 20,779,- 000. In 1953, the U. S. death rate ‘was 9.6 per 1,000 population, about the same as in 1952, but because of the aging population, Metropo- litan Life Insurance Co. statistic- fans suggest that figure represents Telephone Fred J. The Condon household in New York’s Greenwich Village is a sev- en-room contradiction. It’s the apartment of a musician, yet there isn’t a guitar or a banjo in the place, Condon has made at least 500 phonograph records in his life, but there’s no phonograph in his apart- ment and not a single record. Eddie has a liking for whisky, but not on the home grounds. No bottle ever appears in the place unless some friends bring it. Down at his nightclub, however, Mr. Condon is known as a free pourer. 4 He has an unusual remedy for hangovers. “For a hangover,” he suggests, “take the juice of a quart of whisky.’ Actually, he drinks 20 times as much milk as he does strong spirit. He eats nothing during the day- light hours, but his liquid par is three quarts of sweet milk and one quart of buttermilk. Fighter Plane Found In Virginia TAZEWELL, Va.» (@—An 5F1 fighter plane, missing since Friday on a flight from Battle Creek, Mich., to Charlotte, N. C., was found crashed and ‘burned on a mountain near here yesterday. The body of the pilot was still in the cockpit. State police reported that papers in the plane carried the name of Robert Smith. The Air National Guard at Charlotte previously had identified the pilot of the missing plane as Lt. R. B. Smith of Lans- ing, Mich. a member of the Michigan Air National Guard.
