SOCIETY — PERSONALS — NEWS OF INTEREST TO WOMEN ITEMS OF INTEREST TO EVERYONE SUE JONES, Editor Wednesday, March 17, 1954 TH E KEY WEST CITIZEN Page 3 Top o’ the mawning to ye—al- though, by the time you read this, it will be “a great day for the Irish tonight.” In any event—here’s Greetings of the Day to all the Irish in our town. Can’t help but wonder whether there are Irish Conchs—please let me know if this term is correct. With the Shamrock held high~ wearing a green dress, with skin to match (this beastly cold)— let’s be after havin’ a look at the shops. 5 Pe, Heiaad New slipcovers and drapes quickly remove the sterile look from that not - too furnished apartment or house you might have just moved into. Although Tuesday (day of the Great Rain) was only a happy day for ducks—the gay bright colors of the fabrics at the Caroline Shop cheered me immensely. Textures range from light and smooth to the heavy, nubby materials. According to Miss Caroline, provincial prints are gradually replacing the splashy, modern designs. However, at the Caro- line Shop there is a remarkable selection of both types. So, you can make your home quaint and whimsical or strike out with bold color. You are sure to find just: the material to please your fancy. If you want to convert that old day bed into a sofa—or cam- ouflage those foot lockers—why not drop in the Caroline Shop and investigate the idea of foam rubber—cut to any size you wish and covered in the material of your selection. Because all work is done at the shop, time is sav- ed. And so, with pads, pillows and a flounce you can easily have more “sitting down” space. xk * HEADLINE! SCOOP! Fourteen of our well - known citizens will be hung tonight at East Martello Gallery! Advance reports say that this will be a neat, clean business without any pain or rope burn, That famous portrait painter Bor- riello will be Ohief Hangsman and will wind up the show by ‘“‘hang- ing himself” — all this is, of course, pictorially speaking. aaah Mage J Found something absolutely different in furniture stores When | entered the Warehouse Furniture Sales Store on Simon- ton Street, | was simply fla ed with surprise upon learning that the furniture was not brand new, but that all items were used. Now, heretofore, my ideas of used furniture were based on all the broken-down, beaten-up stuff | had seen in stores in other cities. Boy—the Warehouse Furniture Sales Store sure chan- ged all that—let me tell you about this shop! Every week a truckload of furniture from Miami warehou- ses rolls up to the Warehouse Furniture store here. Each item is inspected so that only good, used furniture is put on sale. Such wonderful buys! especial- ly want to call this place to the attention of those people who move so much and are always faced with the necessity of fix- ing up “still another home.” Just about everything one needs along the furniture line is here, plus all those odd, “hard- to-get” items—for instance, you might have been searching for a false front: fireplace with gas burning logs! This comes com- plete with screen and fireplace set. You just have to see the great variety of merchandise here to believe it—and the prices will make your wallet grin with joy! x * * There was a ring around the moon Saturday night and it was one of those soft, white evenings that enhance living here. One of our town’s swellest cou- ples gave a very fine soiree. There was a wonderful combination of Conchs—Navy—winter residents— house guests—young and old and “old-vounger” and “‘young-older,” | —and there was music, Sylvia and | her accordion were in their usual top form—that gal can really play. | The singing circle was led in an expert fashion by Senor Morales, but I must admit—through no fault of his—the harmony was a Jittle uncertain. Another highlight was Bill Neblett’s taking a turn at the “‘squeeze-box” and his music was mightv swell—and later there was also fine piano. the Adorable Beauty Shop at 924 Simonton, * 4% *€ Practically jumped into my cof- fee cup the other morning when I heard sirens—rushed out into the street as two Armed Force Po- lice trucks came squealing around the corner—red lights flashing. ‘The boys had on their crash hel- mets (is that what you call them?) and were holding their rifles “at the ready.” Gee, it was real ex- citing—and I’m sure when that payroll was delivered—the boys in blue were happy too, KOK K, So you think you are in a rut! So you want to travel! So you da m of far-off lands! You don’t have to hop a ship and gailivant to the far corners of the world to bring back souve- nirs, Just a stroll down to the Box at 832 Duval Street will enable you to see many art- icles from exotic places. There are straw coasters from Ecuador — wooden jewelry from the Caribbean Islands—embroid- ered coasters from Jamaica— yes, you'll be fascinated at the labels “China”’—“Italy,” “‘Mad- eria,” etc. But another word or two about this wooden jewelry — simply stunning — made of genuine gun- wood and very budgetwise in that it can be worn with sports outfits and the gold touch sends it off equally well with your dressier numbers. The jewelry was so popular that it sold in a jiffy but a whole new shipment has just arrived. Decided I’d better leave be- fore | succumbed to temptation to go on a big fine buying spree, when the tinkle of a bell caught my ear. Not seeing any bells, Was surprised to learn that they was in the little straw Ecuador- ian dolls. You will be completely captivated with these and need- less to say the small fry will love them. The dolls are cos- tumed in their native dress— with vibrant deep colors—and of such sturdy construction that | am sure they could withstand all of that violent curiosity with which the young usually handle their gifts. Remember—these are found at the Ditty Box. We Ke Rk ASIDE TO COLIN: Found more upholstery needles! From the quantity—bet there isn’t a rip or tear in any furniture in town. Mary Louise says she’ll be happy to lend you the loan of her up- holstery needle. Frank in the com- Posing room. says he has a set of same—all sizes. Sue offers hers —so, now you can throw away that converted paper slip, ¥ M The Candlelight Inn, on Vir- ginia Street, just above White has just reopened and this is wonderful news! The treat of having a home cooked meal, served in a beautiful, stately seventy-five year old mansion is indeed a rarity, However, this can be found at the Candlelight Inn where the food is superbly cooked nd served “family style.” Give Mother a surprise by taking her to this delightful Inn for an excellent dinner amidst charming and relaxing surroundings, x * KEY-notes: Traffic was fit to be tied the other day when the City Electric truck broke down at the intersection of White and Tru- man. Sure hope it recovered as I understand it was one of the new ones, —several days ago, a lady took a terrific tumble on the street. She had turned her heel and real- ly went down. I was sorry that she could not hear all the instan- taneous sympathy and concern which were expressed for her. She rested for only a few minutes and then went on her way—am sure she was embarrassed, but she need not have been and it’s a shame she didn’t realize that strangers were about to offer her a ride home—or a cup of coffee, Just another example of kindness in our town. Made me real proud to overhear such conversation. ® -ok ok As | have said many times, the shopping fac s in our town are excellent. A shining exam- ple of this is the Music Shoppe up near the Atlantic end of Du- val—726 is the exact number. The Rojas’ are charming people ‘Twas truly a lovely evening— an unforgettable party—with the grand, warm hospitality that is so typical of these wonderful friends. ¥ = *€ You can look simply “adora- and their love and knowledge of music is reflected in the wide Variety of phonograph records they handle. There is little doubt that you no longer need to search desperately for that song you want to buy so much, but just couldn't seem to find. FLASH! 3-D invades the pho- Nograph field! The Mitchell 3-D phonograph has a full 15,000 cycles of sound that make up the complete reality of music—the third dimension of true high fidelity. After wander- ing around hopelessly, they decid- ed that their time was up and the hour had drawn nigh, After mu- tually consoling each other on their cold and bitter fate — they saw a St. Bernard coming toward them — complete with cask. The friend expressed his grati- tude and punched the Irishman saying “Look — here comes man’s best friend” — whereupon, the Jrishman raised his head and said, “Faith and begorra — you are right and it has a dog attached.” x wk Have you ever realized that our two religious holidays — Easter and Christmas combine devout- ness for all, plus gaiety for the children? ? The Book Shop on Fleming Street just below Sim- onton carries out this thought in their selection of reading mater- ial. For the kiddies — there are large books — small books — bunny books — chicken books — picure books — you can either read to Junior or find some- thing he can amuse himself with — depends of course on his age, but Janice or George White will help you make the most inter- esting selection. s For the adults, many inspira- tional and religious themes are to be found. | believe the Len- ten Season finds all of us turn- ing more and more te the serene influence of contemplative read- ing. Is this why we celebrate so handsomely on this day? —or is it just the general fine spirits of the Irish? ? ? x ot otk Have Sham-Rocks in my head Shold really be sick a-bed But to Donald’s | will go To get spruced up from head to toe! x we & —am off again to pry the buys.
