If we can get along with- out it entirely 1 would favor that we do so, The key to future Amer- iean-Red Bloc trade is peace. We have offered the key to the Com- munists. They have but to accept it to open the door of trade. In the overall picture of East- West trade the United States must consider the other Free Nations of the world. As Harold Stassen, Director of the Foreign Opera- tions Administration, said recent- ly, “Western European countries depend more heavily on foreign trade than does the United States. In order to live, they must trade.” While your Congressman still ad- heres to the principle that no aid should be given our allies who supply strategic materials to the Communists, some non-strategic trade may be necessary or the American taxpayer will be called upon to subsidize the economy of the Free World. The Eisenhower Administration has indicated that it feels the time is not right to have complete cessaton of East-West trade in non-strategic materials and goods. The Administration has implied concern over taking such a step in world trade since such action might possibly result in a ‘‘net” security loss. Regardless of the recommenda- tions of the ‘“‘self-styled experts” for solving this problem of world trade, we should not kid ourselves into believing that there is an easy, solution.
