Kennan, former U.S. ambas- sador to Russia, has jumped into a three-way fight for the Demo- cratic congressional nomination from Pennsylvania’s 19th District. Kennan won the endorsement of the Adams County Democratic organization yesterday but party leaders in the district’s other two counties are supporting their own candidates. The district, comprising the South-central counties of York, Cumberland and Adams, is now represented by first-term Rep. S. Walter Stauffer, a York Republi- can. Stauffer won by 6,301 votes two years ago over his prede- cessor, James F. Lind, a Demo- erat, when the district was re- shuffled following the 1950 census. Kennan, who lives in East Ber- lin, Adams County—near the Get- tysburg farm owned by President Eisenhower, voluntarily retired from the State Department in 1952 after being recalled at the request of the Soviet. He is now at instructor at Princeton’s In- stitute for Advanced Studies. Other announced candidates for the Democratic nomination at the May 18 primary are Maynard M. Sinall of New Cumberland, Cum- berland County, and Earl D. Lion, of Red Lion, York County. (# — A family of four perished in a blazing apart- ment ‘here late last night—inches from a window and safety. The dead were Paul Imlay, 27, a filling station operator; his wife Betty, 24; and two children, Cindy, 4, and William, about 1. Imlay apparently awoke and smelled smoke in their second- floor garage apartment. Rushing outside, he called to neighbors for help and raced back inside. Fire Chief Francix X. Mannion of Kokomo said he apparently suc- ceeded in getting the wife and two children out of bed but collapsed a few feet from the window through which they could have jumped to safety. Mrs. Imlay was lying across the two children, her outflung arms just inches from the blackened window, Mannion said.
