A 500-pound female turtle— identified as a leatherback, trunk or luth turtle — was brought in by the shrimp boat Dewey. Bill Kroll, Aquarium mana- ger, said the turtle probably is the only one in captivity. The other rare animal is a dacknife fish. According to the Dictionary of Fishes, the leatherback is the rarest of any of the turtles. They prefer water about 150- feet deep and average about 700 pounds. The largest on re- cord weighed 1,450 pounds. Last January, the Aquarium had another leatherback—brief- ly. That one weighed about 800 pounds but he lived only about a week, He pounded his head against the side of his tank in an effort to escape until he killed himself.
