Following the welcoming speech of BPW presi-| dent, Mrs. Alice Nix, Mrs. Harvey) troduced the majority of the large number of people present.| Her commentary was interspersed with asides on the many people whom she knew personally, and her greeting and introductions marked the note of informality and friendliness that characterized the event. Response to the welcoming speech ‘was given by the Honorable C. B. Harvey, Mayor of Key West, which preceded the presentation of a- wards to people selected by BPW for various activities. First award winner to be an- nounced was Miss May Sands, who Bas taught three generations of Key Westers in her 44 years on the | teaching staffs of Monroe County | Public schools which include Har- ris and Truman schools. Miss May was named “Career| Girl of 1953,” and though she will be eligible for statutory retirement! mext June, Miss aid she very much liked being called a “‘gir!,”| and hoped she would feel a girl} at heart always. “Runner-up for the title of “Miss Career Girl of 1953” was Mrs. Jen-| nie de Boer who has devoted| thirty years of service to the Key) West Citizen. Her letter of nomina-| tion for the honor was written by one of the youngest staff members of the Citizen, Mrs. Norma Bray- field, who desctibed ‘Miss Jen- nie’s” loyalty, cheerfulness and ef- ficiency. The letter was read aloud by Mrs, Harvey when “Miss Jen- nie” was introduced to the banquet ne as runner-up for the Career irl title. Orchid corsages were given to both of the ladies, together | with gifts. “The Boss of 1953” was the dis- tinction awarded to Phoebe Hazel- wood who has gained wide recog-| nition for her talent in cutting pro-| files and silhouettes. Only male winner of an award was Dr. J.
