ITS PROFITABLE 70 Page 10 TODAY'S BUSINESS MIRROR ®y SAM DAWSON NEW YORK W—Business steps | ito the final 1953 quarter today | with some persons so intent on a possible twist in the trail that they may be missing the view from the high plateau. Reports now being released tend to stress slight cutbacks from pre- vious records, or any slowing down in the rate of increase. The trend is important to businessmen, of course, since they have to guess ahead or find their planning has gone very sour. But at the mo- ment business a3 a whole is doing mighty well, Let’s look at some of the reports released today: Industrial produe- tion as a whole, employment, steel production, oil production, electric power output, retail trade, business Icans, consumer credit. The headlines are likely to stress the trend since a week ago or a month ago, or a high point in the spring. Tne actual figures, how- ever, stay very high, and in most cases above those of this time a year ago. Whatever the trend in this final business quarter of 1953, the start is from a very high plateau and the trail for the next three months appears to offer few sharp grades. The industrial production index of the Federal Reserve Board slipped in September below the figure in August—a trend con- trary to the usual one in the fall. But the index is at 234 per cent of the 1935-39 average. And a year ago it stood at per cent. Out- put is still nicely higher than last year, Employment didn’t pick up this fall as expected. But it’s still at a record high. Layoffs in some plants have been stressed. Electric power output slipped slightly last, week. But it is still 10 per cent higher than this time last year. Retail trade slowed down in late | summer. But it is picking up now and merchants expect that this month it will cun four per cent ahead of last year. Business loans took a tumble last week. The Federal Reserve Board reports it as one of the largest weekly drops on record— and business loans are supposed to go up at this time of year. But at 23 billion dollars, loans are still 1% billion dollars above a year ago. Check volume handled by banks slipped from previous highs this summer, But it is 10 per cent higher than a year ago. Consumer credit—on which much of present retail prosperity is based—slowed its rate of increase during August. But it climbed to a record high of nearly 27% bil- lion dollars. And that’s around 4% billion dollars higher than a year ago. The consuming public is still buying—whether cash or on the cuff. The height of the plateau nat: urally doesn't contradict the na- ture of the trend developing. But at such a height, a little sagging teedn’t be a reason for exaggerat- ed fears. Catherine Anne and Carolyn Anne, daughters of Mayor and Mrs. Ashton Mouton of Lafeyette, are leaving here much sooner than physicians expected. “But they have improved so rap- idly, so much better than ex- pected,” explained Dr, L. L. Weissmiller, director of Ochsner Foundation Hospital. completely out of danger now.” Dr. Weissmiller said the girls were completely normal and hap- py in every respect. They play with toys, enjoy being fondled by their nurses and have very sunny dispositions, The girls were joined near the base of the spine at birth July 22. They shared a common lower in- testinal tract while the sacrum, a part of the lower vertebrae, was fused. They also were connected in the dural sac, the covering of the spinal cord at the lower end. A team of eight surgeons sepa- rated them Sept. 17. One staff sur- geon said the survival of both girls wrote a new page in medical his- tory. To his knowledge, both twins had never survived such an opera- tion. Evidence of their good health was sene in their rapid gain in weight. At birth, together they weighed 11 pounds 8 ounces. Cath- erine Anne now weighs 9 pounds and Carolyn Anne weighs 8 pounds 12% ounces, They will be brought back here Periodically for checkups. More surgery on the intestinal tract is necessary to complete the oprea- tion, but Dr. Weissmiller said that is several months away. “They are| i LEGAL NOTICES (CONTINUED) ct.
