The Wayne- Fellows production for. Warner Bros. concerns the graphic action surrounding a crash-landing of a transport plane in the frozen wast-! es of northern Labrador. The story, deals with the efforts of the crew) survive during the five harrowing days and nights while thrilling res-| cue attempts are madey by other) Planes, The action is filmed with! the new WarnerPhonie sound. } Based on the best-selling novel) of the same name, “Island In The Sky” was written for the screen by the author of the book, Ernest K. Gann. A pilot for many years, Gann appears to have developed a/ successful formula for authenticity ; | he writes about the things he knows. His latest novel, “High and| Mighty” was chosen as the Book- Of-The-Month selection for May,| 1953 and it too, will be filmed by! Warner Bros, In addition to star John Wayne, the featured cast contains Lloyd Nolan, Walter Abel, Andy Devine,| Allyn Joslyn, James Arness, Har- ry Carey, Jr., and others. The dis- taff side of the film falls to Ann Doran, Dawn Bender and Phyllis Winger. Wayne portrays the pilot of the forced-down plane. Known in the motion picture industry as ‘Mr.| Box Office,” and winner of last year’s “Henrietta” award as the world’s most popular actor, Wayne is currently one of the busiest men in Hollywood. Having been seen re- cently in “Trouble Along The Way” Wayne, after completing ‘Island In The Sky,” left immediately for, Mexico to film the newest of his Warner Bros. releases, “Hondo,” filmed with the new all media camera in three-dimensions. Lloyd Nolan, in “Island In The Sky” plays the role of “Stutz”, one of the pilot-pals of Wayne who scour the uncharted country of Labrador. Nolan’s co-pilot is play- @d by bulky Andy Devine. “Island In The Sky” will pro- bDably rank as one of the “coldest” pictures ever made since a major- ity of the scenes were Photograph- ed in six-foot snow drifts at Don-! ner Lake, high in the mountains of Borthern California. Players and crew had to be transported by bus and cars in a wild mountain yal- ley. From that point Army weasels towing sleds took them two more! miles over the deep snow to the! shooting site. Snowstorms inter- fupted the shooting many times and hazardous ground conditions, accompanied by the 7,000 foot alti-| tude, made the location of strenu-! @us one for the company of ninety. Directed by William Weilman, “Tslaod in The Sky” boasts of the Photography of Academy winner Archie Stout and the tech- Bical direction of the story’s crea- tor, Ernest Gann. Gann also took! an active part in the film, | | & ‘caped the one whose wife no longer bothers to nag him. What is she doing for exercise? Club work? As a matter of fact the real trou- ble with nagging in many modern marriages is that the man doesn’t do enough of it. Many a woman henpecks her husband today be- cause he is too dumb to eealize: how much she yearns te be a hus- band-pecked wife. But 60,000 to 80,000 cheer- ing fans show up every Sunday the Royal Madrid soccer teams} play. International basketball matches like the one a few months ago! with Italy, drew nearly 20,000. Baseball is not so far advanced to widespread popularity and un-|! derstanding. But as many as 5,000 have shown up for recent games between Madrid and American service teams from Germany or Britain. Rugby football remains a uni- versity sport but it has its fanat- ics. The Olympics last year gave a tremendous impetus to track'and field, swimming and horseback sports. The Tour de France bike} race in which a Spanish rider, Bernardo Ruiz, finished third last year has crowded the highways with would-be candidates, Desertion of the bullring began during the ill-fated republic. The republic frowned on the spectacle. After the Civil War there was a temporary revival caused by a magnificent matador, Manolete, killed in 1947. Then a revulsion to blood sports was felt along with lack of topflight toreodors or box- ers, high prices and poor bulls. Most important, bullfighting is not! a participation sport. Kids don’t! get much of a kick any more out of passing an imaginary bull with a flannel rag the way their fathers and grandfathers did. They're out now with a ball, any size, or even |balled up paper if no ball is avail-; able, kicking it around at every opportunity. Baseball is also modelled along American lines, There are 12 teams in the National League and seven regional leagues of about 50 teams plus numerous juvenile teams. Luis Barrios, czar of Span- ish baseball, is concentrating on| the youth for the future. Now Barrios is forming a Euro- pean League with British, French, Dutch, Belgian, German and Ital- ian teams. For co-stars Ann Sheridan and John Lund, it is an ideal showcase, \for displaying their sharp comedy talents. Lund, immortalizing the plumber as a romantic hero for the first time on the screen, gives a splendid performance in his role! of a self-educated man who is so enthralled in his work he can’t jnotice the baby-blue stares sent his lway by his secretary. Ann Sheri- dan, playing his secretary with a masterful touch, proves her apti- tude as a comedienne as she Plays: the girl who has to masquerade as a rich man’s daughter in order to hold her job as a plumber’s sec retary. : A quartet of Hollywood’s mest excellent character actors join Lund and Miss Sheridan in “Just Across The Street” handling roles |that give mirth-provoking touches to the humorous story. Robert Keith, as a suspicious husband, gives a wonderful performance, as does Natalie Schafer, who plays his kittenish wife. Cecil Kellaway, cast as Ann Sheridan's shiftless, drink-loving father, is a lovable Pixie on the screen. Alan Mow. bray, cast as the nose-in-the-air butler, gives another of his clever performances for which he is well- noted. Produced with a sharp eye for humorous situations by Leonard | is a sterling tribute to the comedy technique of Director Joseph Pev- ney, who keeps the pace fast and bright throughout. Photography by ‘Maury Gertsman is topnotch and the settings designed by Emrich Nicholson add greatly to the en- joyment of the comedy. “Just Across The Street” is as wonderful an escape from the’ cares of the day as a vacation in Honolulu, recommended without reservation.
