Half a dozen have stated publicly that they will run and twice that many: have said privately they intend to enter the race, yet nobody is campaigning vigorously. : _ But just wait; that’s all, just wait! As soon as one or two candidates become actively engaged in the cam- paign, they will spur others to activity, and the first thing you know we will be in the midst of one of Key ‘West's hottest campaigns. Thus far, so far as the general public knows, only two aspirants have declared publicly they will run for mayor, C. B. Harvey and Charles R. Roberts, the present mayor and the former city comptroller. But The Citizen bes i predicts that more than two will be in the contest. for|norinern meuntains, or the hills of mayor. One of the suggestions we would put forth, in this connection, is that chronically unemployed workers be limited in total benefits receivable. These chronic cases should be allowed as much unemployment compensation pay in the first year as anyone else. If they continue to be @nemployed their possible compensation, per year, should be lowered steadily, until they have failed to seek unem- Ployment compensation aid for at least one full year. Another method by which the administration of| © the law might be tightened up is a closer check on those unemployed who refuse work because they claim it is not in their skill classification. It is a well known fact that many jobs are turned down by unemployed workers drawing compensation who could fill them but who pre- fer to accept other jobs. This, of course, costs the Govern- ment large sums of money and tends to maintain unem- ployment totals at a high level when they could be de- creased by tighter administration of the law. There are, no doubt, many more suggestions which should be acted upon, and perhaps some which would prove-more effective than those mentioned above. The administration unemployment compensation should be tightened as much as possible in order to save money, and to eliminate encouragement of laziness or loafing on the part of those who prefer a dole to honest work.
