Precedent Set By Naming Women To Posts Here For First Time In a most impressive ceremony tive deacons were ordained last }unday at the Church of the Rock, | 335 Francis Street. They were then mstalled together with four other deacons who had been previously ordained. This church has taken an unusual step for the southern} church in that three of the deacons ordained were women. While the | USA Presbyterian Church and the Congregational churches accept wo- men as deaconesses, the southern churches have not as yet authoriz-| ed this step. The women so honor-| ed were, Mrs. Walter Bell, Mrs. Joseph I. Brent and Mrs. Emory Harris. Next Sunday the Session has authorized the ordaination of Wil- liam W. Hill, who with six others will be regularly installed as of- ficers of the new church. The of- ficers have expressed their satis- faction of the progress made in the church and are grateful for the interest and assistance of- fered by their many friends. Next Sunday morning the Sunday | “School will meet at the regular| hour ten o’clock, and Mr. Hill, the | Superintendent, has promised class- es for all age groups. The Pioneers, under direction of the Board of Re- ligious Education with Mrs. Ruth Jackson as Adult Advisor, have in- stalled a ping pong table during the Daily Vacation Bible School, and will have recreational attrac- tions besides the regular devotional periods which meet each Sunday evening at 6:30 p. m. Sunday morning the Rev. Ralph Rogers will preach at the regular wofship service beginning at elev- en o'clock. His subject will be, “Is there no Balm in Gilead?” It seems that in olden times there | was found a magic balsam in Gil-| ead which would cure many diseas- | es. The balsa disappeared and the physicians apparently lost the | s prescription so that there was no hope of recovery from the old rem- edies. Modern man may not be/s suffering from the same ailments but today the diseases are of the mind. and heart. The only cure is | in the blood of Jesus Christ, SUNDAY SCHOOL LESSON. Paul’s Joy in Christ —— Philip- | pians 1:12.27 By RALPH ROGERS Churches, like people, differ in | their characteristics and behavior, | Paul loved the church at Philippi. ‘The city was named for Philip of Macedon and just as Rome hacy) fought its crucial battle outside the city walls, Paul had fought and won | his greatest battle within the walls It was orginally cailed the Krenides or “The Little Fountains’ because of the many fresh-water springs near by. It also had deposits of gold and silver and was surround ed by beautiful mountains. It was here that Paul claimed one of his “pet’ churches. Other churches had been reprov- | ed and corrected, but to the Philip- | pian church he had nothing but praise. Dr. James Iverach has com. pared this church with the others when Paul wrote them, “When I departed from Macedonia no | which | message by During his recent Bishop of Hono!
