SOCIETY — PERSONALS — NEWS OF INTEREST TO WOMEN DOROTHY RAYMER, Society Editor Friday, June 26, 1953 THE KEY WEST CITIZEN Page 5 SHOP HOPPING WITH What d’ya know! Friday went and crept up on us, just like that It’s a good sign though that a whole week can whiz by fast. Just shows that you're not a bit bored keeping yourself busy. However, don’t let time get away from you and pile too much ahead. Every one has just twenty four hours you know, no more and no less. Make ’em count kids, and save out a few to go shop hopping with me. ns * For the very first time in my life, | get severely scratched ing around with a vacuum The man in the poiple car told me that it was duck soup to flea the cat with the darned old Electrolux, and he was partly right. | didn’t duck, 1 was in the soup | out that Riley hates Electroluxes on sight. The cleaner has a little bottle attachment that goes on the tail end. You can de-moth or de- humidify a closet with it, put water in it to clean the floor, spray wax the floor, paint a room, or, in an emergency fill it with flea powder and apply it to the household pet. That is, you can apply it if said pet will hold still for said application. The idea is that the foofing part of the cleaner blows a sharp little spray of the powder onto the fur, part- ing same and getting it right down to the skin where it does the most good. Riley didn’t seem to understand that. Ill probably never know whether it was the hum of the cleaner or the tickle on the epidermis, but with me holding tight to all four paws and Al weilding the infernal machine, Riley let out a great big squawk and flew the coop, scratching me up good en-route. Well I’m almost healed anyhow and I’m going to let Riley have all his s to himself, because 1 know that | can use my Elect- rolux to very fine advantage every day if necessary on the furniture so that no self respect- ing flea would even want to ven: ture near if. 4 Hey there, any of you Conchs like Conch salad? I’ve discovered that it’s real wonderful, I like them fixed any way, but icy cold and slivered into little bits raw is a big favorite. So take one big fresh conch and give it the ice and sliver treatment. Then make a nice crispy tossed salad your favorite way with the vegetables cut a wee bit finer than usual, Toss the conch up with the salad, salt and pepper to taste, and then séason it up real tart with key lime juice and a smidgeon of olive - oil. It’s real good. Try it and see. A real nice fellow at one of our real nice sea food places told me about ft. Then sold me just the right conch to do it with, * * * For lovely foliage, and yeer round bloomi you can’t beat the Hibiscus. Besides that, the blossoms are so lovely. .No wonder South Sea Maidens Tra- jitionally wear them. oNel South Sea Maidens and tradition notwithstanding. . .! think quite highly of them in my own yard, and so do you. They add so much to the appearance of a home, a street and a whole city. Which brings us to the point. There is a brand new ship- ment at Baldwin's Nursery of all the lovely colors “and varieties. They are-in bloom right now, so you can tell exactly what kind of a flowering plant you are getting. » *» * Latest news from the Shopper i -that there is going to be a ° show and card party out at the American Legion Home tonight at & p, m. It is for the Benefit of the Hospital Nurses Auxillary Re sides seeing a very nice style show put on by one of Key West's nicer stores, and Emceed by me, there will be a card party, and there will also be some very nice prizes awarded. You don’t even have to be a card sharp to win one, be cause there are going to be d prizes awar Treat to a Friday night of fun, along a very good cause, ae ee There are box lunches, box socials, box cars and soap bex @raters, fe name just « tw box ey items. Now comes @ bex sale. ‘These boxes contain items of use te Children. It's a new one on me, but sounds like a very good | idee. Starting teday at Children’s Cerner ever on the cerner of Fleming end Simenjon Street across from Sears is a Semi An. nual Clearance Sale, and that’s where the boxes come in. Little Willie Mae Simmons went around collecting all the odds and ends in the store, and also made a cou- ple of real canny buys to pass on to you. Then she sorted them out and looked around for a way to merchandise them. So on the big tables at the rear are a group of boxes containing toys and books and games; suspend- ers, socks, and pocket books; slips and shorts and shirts and sunsuits and bathing suits, and all sort of things. Best part of all is that the boxes are labeled “We "Se" “50e" “T5e” and “1,00, and all the items therein go for just that. Besides the big box sale, there is a very large rack of girls dresses, sizes four to twelve that are selling for some very wee prices, and then, a big buy just for you, ten of the loveliest bet- ter dresses seen this spring that are all going to sell for just $6.98. Children’s Corner needs the room, They have word that the back to school clothes are on the way, so they have to clear out, and this sale is your gain, * 4 * Note from 50 years ago on Chil- dren’s clothes says that the Baby at six months wears long white cotton stockings which can be pin- ned to the napkin and should be worn all summer. It also says that if you have a 44 inch watch chain you are very fortunate and should wear it as they are very popular. Wear it around your neck and keep your watch in your girdle. There does not follow any advice on what to do if you want to see what time it is, * * &* If you are not a Hospital at- tendant, nurse, beautician, or waitress, this probably won‘t in- ir, if you are, you that Ketton King has the exclu- sive agency for White Swan Uni- forms. They carry a very large stock of styles and sizes, and on top of that if you can’t seem to get the style you want in the size you need, from the White Swan catalogue at the store you can order just about anything you de- sire in the way of a uniform, and get it with in a very few days. Then, for all ladies: Kotton King has those wonderful cotton plisse shadow panel slips, and Plisse gowns, beth long and short, or pajamas the same. All lavishly ‘oidery trimmed too. pee tee A whipped cream cake is real good eatin’ these hot days, especi- ally cold from the refrigerator. Ever try it flavored with coffee? It won't keep you awake nights either. . .only from remembering how good it is. Three layers of white cake {is better than two (more cake and cream). Whip one pint of heavy cream until quite stiff. Add four X sugar to taste and a teaspoon of vanilla, Then sift in some in- stant coffee, a tiny bit at a time and fold in with a fork. Taste it as you go, and don’t taste too much or you won't have any for the cake. Jyst ‘till the flavor suits you, At the last fold in the stiffly, beaten white of one egg to hold the cream, Ice the cake in the usual manner and chill for an hour or more, Be sure to serve in LARGE wedges. * # # The lady over at Ideal knows that seersucker is the ideal material fer children’s clothes these sultry days. I’m very happy that I have never been on the spot where I would }have to decide on the death or jcontinuing existence of a human | being, even one who had betrayed his country. But seeing has how not one, but several of our law makers, men elected by us be- | cause we trusted in them to make our decisions for us; decided that |the penalty for selling out their} ‘nation should be death, why this) | great storm of protest? It all stemmed from | her interest in the excavation of | the ancient city of Ur back in 1930. | She began reading about the ar- chaeologist’s discovery of the bur- ied city in the Mesopotamian’ Val- ley and picked up the gleaming d of the Abraham-Isaac- Jacob old Testament saga. In research, Eva discovered that Ab: m’s wife Sarah, “was quite a ” Said Mrs. Heilweil, “She was not only beautiful but extre- nely intelligent. An iconoclast, she | was one of the first advocates of modern feminine psychology. On the surface; Sarah had a subor- dinate position, but the fact that | she was taken into Pharoah’s ha- rem and became an_ intellectual advisor with tremendous influence, brings out the real force of her character and her impact on the | times. If they had realized that Abraham was Sarah's mate, he would have been killed at once,” Eva explained. She added that the current suc- cess of books and dramas with a religious theme (for example, “The Robe”), was due to the trite but true fact that “history cer. | tainly does repeat itself.” She theo- tized that every time the world is in turmoil, which is today’s pre- dicament, people turn to: the ex- perience of the past for reassur- ance. “Maybe we want the sec- urity of knowing that problems and desperate situations have been solved before and want to know more about the wisdom of the past.” Eva's -enthusiasm, profound un- derstanding, intellectual and daz- zling imagination, but with objec. tive approach, are not only re- flected in her writing, but in her own lively and energetic person- ality. I have a hunch that Eva's next play heroine, Sarah, had the same She created drama with her life. Eva is creating it with words.
