. KEY WEST REACHES FINALS IN DISTRICT TOURNEY WEDNESDAY, DAIRY QUEEN WHIPS VX-1 IN TILT WEDNESDAY Conchs Gain 3-0 Victory In Miami Over Pompano By GLYNN ARCHER, JR., Key West advanced to the finals of the Southern Dis- trict Class A Baseball Tour- nament when they defeated the Pompano Beanpickers Wednesday at the University of Miami Field. The Conchs will play the winner of yes- terday’s South Broward-Cen- tral Catholic tilt at the same place on Friday. If the Conchs can come up with a win in this tilt they will play the winner of the Northern Dis- trict tourney for the right to represent the District in State com- petition. < Key. West was never behind in yesterday’s contest as they hopped on Pompano hurler Len Corson for @ three run lead which they never relinquished. Robbie Lastres, Conch firstbaseman, started things off for Key West when he beat out an infield hit. The next batter, Eloy Rodriguezs hit the next pitch right at the shortstop who bobbled the ball and both runners were safe. Donnie Cruz then slammed a long double into right-center field and the Conchs were ahead by two runs. Cruz advanced to third on an infield out and scored moments later when Parrish, Pompano eat- cher dropped a third strike and threw wild to first base. This was the only scoring in the game as Courson settled down and allowed the Conchs only two scat- tered-singles the rest of the game. Meanwhile, George Lastres and Gibby Gates, combined their pitch- ing talents to hold Pompano score- less. However, this was not easy and the Conch infield saved the day with some spectacular play. They handled sixteen chances flaw- lessly and pulled off a sparkling double play to pull themselves out of a hole when Pompano had two men on with one out-in the fifth » inning. In the third frame, the Bean- Pickers had their greatest scoring opportunity of the game when with Parrish on first, Ed Pinnell singled ‘Thursday, May 14, 1953 THE KEY WEST CITIZEN to rightfield and Parrish tried to score. Hal Solomon, Conch right- fielder uncorked a perfect throw to the plate and Parrish was eras- ed by three feet. The only otner point where Key West was in trouble was in the last stanza when Pompano _ got two men on with one out. However, a forceout and a fine pickoff play from catcher Julio Henriquez to Bob Lastres ended the game and gave Key West a spot in the finals. Fine infield play on the part of Vince Catala and Biff Salgado, Plus the heads up play of Henri- quez were big factors in the Key West victory, In the hitting department, Rob- bie Lastres paced the Conchs with two hits while Cruz’ double was the deciding factor in the clash. George Lastres collected Key West’s only other hit. Richie Radcliffe led Pompano with two hits in two trips to the plate. The box score: KEY WEST Player— Gates, cf-p R.
