The settlement followed a 15-hour negotiation session. Working rules, time claims and grievances in dis- pute since last July were at issue. Neither side would give details of the settlement which affects 2,- 300 trainmen, NEW YORK w—Arthur Godfrey today starts the final week of his multiple radio and television per- formances before leaving the air to undergo surgery. The husky redhead is scheduled to enter a Boston hospital Mon- day, May\4, for an operation to correct a hip injury suffered 20 years ago in an automobile acei- dent, Although it is expected to be four months before Godfrey can resume his normal activities, a spokesman said the operation was not regarded as dangerous. CALGARY, Alta., w—An explo- sion in a refrigerator car rocked @ passenger train just after it ar- rived in the station here last night. An alighting passenger, Mrs. THE KEY WEST CITIZEN Monday, April 27, 1953 Charles J. Blake, was thrown 14 feet by the blast and killed. Her husband and three Canadian Pa- cifie railway employes were hurt. The explosion destroyed the re- frigerator car, on the Edmonton- to-Calgary train. It shattered hun- dreds of windows in the vicinity. Investigators expressed belief the blast occurred when a railway worker thrust a gas lamp into the car, igniting leaking gas. HANOI, Indochina, — French transport planes poured a steady stream of troops and war material into the Laotian royal seat of Lu- angprabang today as Communist- led Vietminh fortes drove toward the city. The best estimates are that the invaders are four or five days away. French and Laotian troops dug trenches and constructed barbed wire entanglements and other fort- ifications around the.town. The 6,- 000 residents remained calm and Laos’ aging king, Sisavang Vong, and his son; Prince Savang, ar- nounced they would stay in their capital. Surely this service- man is entitled to see his child whom he is supporting. How else is he going to see the child if he doesn’t call at the home of his ex- wife who has custody of the child. I have always found Masterson to be very nice, kind and gener- ous person in the past years that I have known him and I feel sure that he would call at the home for no other intention than to see his child. Fifteen Seats French Turn Their Backs On World War II Hero’s Party PARIS (#—French voters turned their backs on Gen. Charles De Gaulle’s Rally of the French People in municipal elections yes- trday. At the same time, the Com- munists just about held their own in the working class districts of the big cities, but lost votes and con- {trol of some town halls in rural areas. The biggest gainers from the re- buff to the Raliy of the French People (RPF) were independents who had rallied arofind the name of former Premier Artoine Pinay. During his term of office, Pinay made a determined and well publi- cized effort to hold down prices that won him great personal Ppop- ularit. The Gaullists started their rise to power in the 1947 municipal e- lections, At the time they captur- ed about 27 per cent of the vote to equal Communist strength. They maintained their popularity in the national tlections of 1951, but since have been hampered by the general’s refusal to cooperate with other anti-Communist parties. The sharp loss of RPI influence had been freely predicted. Returns still were being tab- ulated today, and few final results were available. The incomplete fig- ures, however, confirmed the main trends. Unofficial figures for Paris in- dicated the Communists had held all of their 26 seats on the muni- cipal council. The RPF, however, dropped from 26 seats to 11. A grouping of independents captured 25 seats. This list was not repre- sented in 1947, DEATH STEFAN LATOCHA Stefan Latocha, 42, died Satur- day in the U.S. Naval Hospital. The body was sent last evening to Chester, Pa., for funeral services {and burial in the family plot. Survivor: wife, Mrs. Agnes La- tocha. Lopez Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. He attempted to read the speech he delivered at Miami Friday but aft- er he said it would take 13 min- utes, Speaker Bryant told him he had not been granted that much time on the floor. However, he read some of it in which he declared an attempt was being made to deny the people of Dade a vote on the matter. He praised Rep. Floyd, the only 'mem- jber of the Dade delegation who favors a referendum on the issue. Floyd didn’t speak today. The other delegation members said they felt the issue was set- jtled as far as Miami is concerned in 1945 when a referendum was held. He’s the guy who caused a riot in New York when he dropped nylon stockings over the city for a publicity stunt during the World War I nylon shortage. He has made several underwater movies and actually tackles man-eating sharks in their own element using only a sheath knife. Amusing note was the luring of seagulls and pelicans to the scene by tossing fish tidbits into waters adjacent to the sponge boat, The {birds hovered around, but only as long as they were fed. Everytime the director used a hand loud- speaker to direct the boat action from a distance, the gulls scream- ed defiance and went wheeling off into the wild blue yonder.
