Leonard W. Hall cf New York as its new chairman. Hall got unanimous approval as a successor for C. Wesley Roberts, who resigned, in an informal can- vass yesterday of Eisenhower, Vice President Nixon and Senate and House leaders. The canvass was made by a GOP national subcom- mittee. The 52-year-old Hall, who served several terms as chairman of the Republican Congressional Cam- paign Committee before he quit Congress to win election as a New York surrogate judge, takes over a party described by some of its members as financially “broke” Friday, April 10, 1953 FOODS THE KEY WEST CITIZEN In a swansong statement, Rob- erts predicted that the GOP will increase its slim margins in the Senate and House in the 1954 elec- tions. The new administration, Roberts declared, “has been handicapped in taking over actual operative control of government as a conse- quence of the ingenious and sur- reptitious devices by which the |Democrats violated the concepts jof civil service by packing the civil service lists, at top level, with political patronage ...” Nevertheless, he added, ‘‘no man has ever taken command and done more in so short a space of time” as Eisenhower. Sen. Taft of Ohfo, the Republi- can leader, said one of Hall’s first jobs apparently will have to be Page 7 DON'T DRY OUT in an ADMIRAL now! 2 GREAT FOOD SAVING APPLIANCES IN 1 Dual-Temp Get An Exciting New 1953 Model The Ohio senator, one of those who approved Hall’s selection, said he hopes the new chairman picks a Western man as his executive assistant, The name of Wayne Hood, Wisconsin state chairman, was mentioned by some other party members in this connection. Hall’s election seemed likely to inspire a Democratic blast at his record of voting in Congress. The New Yorker traveled on Eisen- hower’s presidential campaign train and is reported generally in accord with the President's views on major issues. Democrats already were firing away at Republican claims that they are trim ming federal ex- penses, have stopped the drop in farm prices, are cleaning up sub- versives in the government and have taken strong steps in foreign Policy in their 75 days in office. Republicans said they already have cut appropriation requests to congress 444 million dollars under former President Truman’s esti- mates. But Sen. Sparkman (D-Ala) said this was just one of many “fulsome claims which are made without any resemblance to the facts.” Sparkman, the 1952 Democratic vice presidential nominee, said he believes that when Congress has completed its work on the budget, the GOP will have increased the total over Truman’s estimates. | In this connection, Sen, Magnu- son (D-Wash) pointed out that Gen. Brownell was asking for nine million dollars more in funds than the Justice Department has in the current year, although his request was seven million under Truman's estimates. The Democratic National Com- mittee said in a statement that Taft himself had said the Repub- licans were making slow progress, that the business men chosen for high government posts have no experience in government and that @ new program can’t beputinto effect before July 1. Some past GOP chairmen have been non-salaried. Roberts was paid $32,500 a year. He resigned after a islative committee criticized his acceptance of a fee for helping to negotiate the sale of a hospital to the state. The committee said he ootagp the spirit of the lobbying ws. It works only for a time. But it has banished this dread cancer in one human for at least a year, and has helped a tew others. Until now there has not been any drug or treatment, except sur- gery at the very earliest signs, which has had the slightest effect upon melanoma. This dark cancer- ous growth always starts some- where on the skin, then spreads with distressing rapidity inside the body. This heartening step in chemical warfare upon cancer was reported to the American Association for Cancer Research by Doctors Far- ber, Virginia Downing, and Majib Abu-Hydar of the Children’s Can- cer Research Foundation and De- partment of Pathology, Harvard Medical School, Boston. TEPA has been used so far upon 17 humans with melanomas, Dr. Farber said. It temporarily knocked out the cancers in five. ‘The other 12 were persons in whom the cancers already had spread to internal organs. Work on mice indicates that Tepa might entirely abolish human melanomas if they were caught very early, said Dr. Farber. Mel- anomas account for about three per cent of all cancer deaths. TEPA was developed by scien- | tists of the Calco Chemical Divi-| sion, American Cyanamid Com-| pany and first was tried against leukemia, the cancer of the blood. | ttle effect against acute | but by happy accident | ied upon melanoma. Germany Not Anticipated By JOHN SCALI WASHINGTON (®—Top Ameti- can officials today saw little chance Russia would accept an American-German challenge to permit genuinely free elections in Communist-ruled East Germany. President Eisenhower and Ger- man Chancellor Konrad Adenauer, in a move to test Russia’s current Peace offensive, urged Moscow to agree to this and also free some 300,000 German war prisoners still in Soviet hands. The joint American-German ap- peal came in a formal communi- que announcing the results of three days of intensive talks between Ei- senhower, Secretary of State Dul- les and a German delegation head- ed by Adneauer. Adenauer arranged to leave by Plane today for San Francisco, to begin a nine-day cross country tour before returning to Germany. As he prepared to wind up the first visit a German chancellor ever has made to the U. S., Aden- auer could point to these chief achievements during his confer- ences: 1. A pledge the U.
