JIMMY MIRA FIRES Y GOLF TITLE kkk K. W.CONCHS WALLOP REDLANDS * * * Gene Witzel Places Second With Hot 68 Here Sunday dimmy Mira put together the best round of his golf- ing career yesterday at the Key West Golf Club to cap- ture the City Championship when he fired ¢ magnificent 69 over the Stock Island layout.. At the same time, Navy champ Gene Witzel was burning up the fairways with a record breaking 68 but Mira copped the crown over the 54 hole distance by five strokes with a 215 net as compared with Wit- zel’s 220. It is the second city title that the 87-year-old stroker has captured. He held the title championship in 1947, the year that he came to Key West from Tampa. They seem to base this on the poor attendance. One particular fan says that publicity is lacking. “There are no placards around town, like in the case of football when long before the season tic- kets are placed on sale and pla- cards with schedules are hung in every business place in Key West,” he added. How ‘bout it, Coach Jnoes? Let’s get together and do something about drawing crowds to these school games. Let the world know of the wonderful team you have. Hail the “King of Slings,” yes, that’s George Lastres lanky swift pitcher of the Key West Conchs who is making a name for him- self in the current baseball con- ference. The youngster boasts a handsome record so far this sea- son. He has pitched 20 innings, during which he has struck out 36, walked 11, has one wild pitch against 1 balk no hit batsman, 3 earned runs and 10 hits. Great prospects in this kid, providing “smoke doesn’t get in his eyes.” Folks at the stadium Friday really got a bang out of the way Mama Lastres rushed to meet sonny George as the school pitch- ing ace walked off the mound in the seventh inning after striking out ‘pinch hitter Robert Somers for the last and final out of the contest, to give him a congratu- lating embrace. It was a one hit- ter for George, s Allen Underwood, Redlands’ right hander didn’t do so badly for his club — the seven errors his team mates form high school pitcher in the class of *48, just recently discharged from the Army Air Force, says that judg- ing by the way the upstate kids field the ball gives all indications that they are not too experienced in playing under arc lights. There maybe something to that for the kids really misjudged a good many air balls. Julio Henriquez had quite a busy week-end behind the plate. The Husky catcher was credited with 27 put outs in the two game series. He also assisted it putting out four. Believe it or not but as it looks from this corner and judging by the brand of ball the kids are playing this season nothing will stop them from winning the tour- nament this year. So far the Davis clan had proven far super- ior to their opponents. Got to hand it to Coach ‘Paul Davis; he is a hard working man and he keeps the boys on the alert. “I want nothing but base- ball talk spoken in this dugout from now and until the game is over.” He tells the kids just be- fore game time. There is always a joker in a ball game and the title went to Tom Torbert Saturday night who was coaching at first base for the Redlands. Tom seemed to have gotten on the nerves of chief um- pire Afbert Rodriguez, who by the way is doing a grand job together with Red Myatt, by continuous yell- ing from the coach’s box at first, “let’s get the game over with and go to the dog track,” well he ap- parently over used the slang so he was ordered out of the coach- ing position and to the grand- stand. The kid however kept up with his fun. So it goes. Lefty Ron Tyre, Redland | twirler, had the pretty well under through the third inning but showed signs of weak- ening as the fourth frame got under way ‘and the Conchs shelled his deliver- ies all over the lot for 3 tallies. From there on it was easy going for Paul Davis and his crew as they came through with a four-run rally in the fifth on two safeties, a base on balls two hit batsmen and a wild pitch. The contest was beautifully Played for the first three innings with the 21 favor of the locals, | Redlands’ lone score came in| the second Yrame when Robert Bon- ham got a free ticket to first, stole second on the second pitch and held up at third base as Ray Kugler was thrown out second to first, Bonham crossed the platter when Don Cruz drop curve failed and went wild and over catcher Julio Henriquez head. i Key West tied the count in the} bottom of the second when Julio} Henriquez belted a threé bagger to deep center and scored on Vin- cent Catala squeeze bunt along the third base line. The Conehs pushed over the tie ending tally in third inning on singles by Elroy Rodriquez and George Lastres aided .by a field- er's choice and a base on balls, Don Cruz who held the visitors to three well scattered singles was never in trouble, although he showed defectiveness at times. He struck out 14 batters The Lastres brothers sparkled at the offensive for the Conchs With each getting three hits of four trips to the pan. Allen Under- wood got two of the 3 hits for Redlands.
