I nominate Gil- bert Roland. ‘ The Latin actor seems to have found the secret of lasting youth. He readily admits to being 47, yet he has the face and figure of a far younger man. He also has a youth- ful outiook on life, but with a calm, deep philosophy that can come only with years of good living. Career-wise, he is the envy of his fel actors. In the past five years, he has gone from picture to picture, delivering finely etched performances such as in “My Six Convicts” and “The Bad and the Beautiful.” Yet he doesn’t have the rigors and the insecurity of being a sfar. “I don’t want to be a star,” be blandly declares, “‘I’ve had it before, and I know what it’s like. Let the young kids have it now.” At present he is finishing up “The Diamond Queen” with Ar- lene Dahl and Fernando Lam ‘This week he leaves for Flori to portray a sponge fisherman in “12-Mile Reef” with Robert Wag- ner and Terry Moore. Then he goes to Spain to appear with Clau- dette Colbert in “That Lady,” which Katharine Cornell did on the stage. Of course, the picture business was not always as rosy for Roland. He was a big hit in the ‘20s, when Latin lovers had their heyday on the screen, His star faded with the advent of the grapefruit-in-the- face styie of movie lover. After he got out of the Army in World War Ul, he rode the range in the Cisco Kid series. “No producer wanted to hire me,” he recalled. “They said I ‘was a Western actor.” John Huston changed all that. He interviewed the actor for a role in “We Were Strangers.” “Can you sing?” Roland replied he couldn’t. “Can you play a gui- SubRon Officers’ Wives will pre- | accepting or soliciting brides. sent an Easter Egg Hunt on Sat- urday, April 4 at 3:30 p. m. Huston made him get a haircut, and the director even wielded the scissors himself. Ro- land submitted to all this, and the results brought a revival of his filrn career. He has made 15 pic- tures in the past five years, and turned down more. How does he stay so young? “For one thing, I play tennis every day of the year,” he an- swered. “I have the same waist- line—29 inches—that I had when I started in pictures as an extra in 1925, “And then I do not worry. I do not eat myself up inside by fretting about things. That’s what makes People old.” The third secret cf his youthful- ness was stated very simply: “women.” Irrigation pumping sometimes reduces the Rio Grande nearly to @ trickle at its mouth.
