Page 2 THE KEY WEST CITIZEN Thursday, March 12, 1953 | Executive Officer Of Naval Station Appointed Capt. Captain Charles M. Henderson, USN, Executive Officer of the U. S. Naval Station here received his official appointment to that rank this week. Prior to his assignment as Ex- ecutive Officer of the Naval Sta- tion, Captain Henderson was Ex- ecutive Officer of the Key West-; based submarine tender the USS Howard W. Gilmore; Operations Officer of Submarine Squadron FOUR, and Division Commander of Submarine Division 41. The son of Mr. and Mrs. Ro- bert C. Henderson of Shreveport, | La., he was graduated from Byrd High School at Shreveport and at- tended the Louisiana State Uni-; versity at Baton Rouge, La. Commissioned 2s Ensign from the U. S. Naval Academy in 1934 he received his first duty assign- ment aboard the cruiser USS Raleigh. Captain Henderson is married to the former Catherine Noreen O'Connor of Seattle, Wash. S. | authorities, an improbability. The contrast between Guerre- _ ro at the hearing yesterday, and the cocky, egotistical man who appeared before Criminal Court Judge Thomas Caro on an ult and battery charge two months ago, was considerable. On the latter occasion, Guerre- ro emanated reckless contidence. He told the Judge proudly: “I’m not an ordinary shrimp- er.” all, his brown eyes looked sorrow- ful, his arms were held close to ‘his side, he sat low in his chair; as though he would like to be even smaller than he is. Eight witnesses testified at Ira Altury’s hearing, including ex- policeman Danilo Goodrich, Po- lice Lt. Gene Hernandez, and ,others who heard “Capt.” Guer- jrero invite Maribona for a trip on “my yacht’’ to Cuba. Guerrero readily pleaded guilty to the charge of grand lareeny as/ he did to the Federal charge. He | made no attempt.to defend him- * self, and only asked one ques- tion. When the real skipper of the “Ramos” testified, Guerrero said: “Are you known as ‘Joe?’ Skipper Irving Jones said he was known as “Joe.” Guerrero said that was impor- tant to him because when offi- cials had asked him if he knew Capt. Jones of the “Ramos”, he had replied no, not realizing that “Joe” is Capt. Jones. Owner Frantz today said that he feels the prosecution of Guer- | rero will halt any further tempts to rob shrimp boat ers “This is a new industry,” he said. “It needs every protection possible.”’ The “Rames”, center of inter- national interest, will take out to- day for its Yirst shrimping trip since its unexpected voyage to Cuba. The regular crew, headed bj Capt, Jones will get her underway today, Frantz said. (Further Clash | Will Begin On | Grave Trouble | i | By JOHN M. HIGHTOWER | WASHINGTON (#-U. S. officials | said today further shooting clashes | between American and Communist aircraft along the Iron Curtain would hold grave danger of setting off an international explosion. That was a majcr reason why the latest incident is taken so seri- ously here. In the kind of trigger- finger tension which now exists in the East - West border country, moreover, there is a serious risk of new clashes. A Czechoslovak claim that the American jet fighter shot down by a Soviet-made MIG15 Tuesday was over Czech territory was certai ‘to be scornfully rejected by the iv. S. Informants here and at the U. S. jairbase at Wiesbaden said there was no doubt whatever that the U. S. plane and a companion jet were patrolling well inside Ger- many’s U. S. zone when two Red aircraft approached and opened fire. The U. S. within a matter of hours registered an official pro- test with the Red Czech govern- ment at Prague, asserting that the clash took place over West Ger- many and protesting against a ter- ritorial violation. Prague, as expected, yesterday turned down the protest and told the American Embassy the clash occurred after the U, S. planes | had penetrated Czech air space ‘and refused to obey an order to land. U. S. officials who may not be named said it was hard to know precisely what significance to at- tach to the incident. They seemed to doubt that it was a deliberate, overt action on ordets from the Red high command. The tendency appeared to be to regard it rather as ‘one of those things” which happens in an area of high East- | West tension. In such a situation other inci- dents could very well occur. It is ; that which causes a great deal of apprehension here. Information from the Defense Department indi- eates that American pilots are ex- pected to shoot back if attacked and, if, unfriendly aircraft invade U. S. territory, are to enforce an | order to land with gunfire if nec: | essary. | One difficulty is that a pilot traveling at 600 miles an hour may | sometimes be unable to determine | exactly what is home territory and | what is not. Thus authorities here | conceded that the Czech flyers in the Tuesday incident may actually | have thought ‘hey were over Czech | territory. | But these authorities said the | ‘downed Americap plane had not | been over Czechbsiovakia at any | time. They said radar proved that. | SINGLE CHIEF OF | STAFF AIMED AT | WASHINGTON ( — Army lead-| ers are trying to bring all three armed services under a_ single chief of staff, Rep. Almost all major divisions of the | market displayed improvement, but there were some ragged ex- ceptions. Gains ran to around a point at the best while losses were fairly well restricted to minor fractions. Major divisions improving were railroads, steels, motors, and air- crafts. The oils were mixed and some chemical companies were retarded. Studebaker was ahead a major fraction after reporting 1952 earn- ings equal to $6.05 a share as against $5.35 a share the previous year. Among other higher stocks were New Haven Railroad, Baltimore & Ohio, Texas Co., Western Union, Dow Chemical, Westinghouse Elec- tric, ABC-Paramount, Bethlehem Steel, General Motors, Chrysler, Boeing, and United Aircraft. Lower were Standard Oil (NJ), Du Pont, and Santa Fe. IN THE CIRCUIT COURT OF THE SIXTEENTH JUDICIAL CIRCUIT OF FLORIDA. IN AND FOR MONROE COUN- TY. IN CHANCERY.
