Witzel walked off with the crown last year with strokes to spare and he has been playing par golf this year. He recently won the se- cond flight championship in the Dixie Amateur Tourney in Miami. He will be tough to beat as he isa fine stroke player. The city championship ‘tourna- ment this year will be played on a 54-hole stroke play basis. The first round of 18 holes will be played on March 15th. The second round of 18 holes will be played on March 22nd and the finals will be played on March 29th. After the second round is com- plete, the field will be reduced to the low six players who will play the final 18 holes. The player in this group who has the lowest stroke score for the 54 holes will be declared the winner and crown- ed the city champion for 1953. There are several players who are capable of beating Witzel and if the breaks go right-any one of them can win. They are: Norton Harris, Harry Knight, Humbert Mira and Jimmy Mira, who are all former city champs. ‘The higher handicap golfers al- so have a chance to win some | valuable prizes. After each 18 hole round and at the completion of | the 36 holes, prizes will be award- .ed to the winners cn the basis of jet scores. This will enable the higher handicap players to be competing for nice prizes even though they may not be in the running for the ebampionship. However, anyone entering the tournament will be competing for the championship, Who knows? A couple of hot rounds can put any- one in the select group of six who will play in the finals.
