Key ‘THE KEY WEST CITIZEN Wednesday, February 25, 1953 West Scenes Caught By Austrian Painter E. Huber Noted Austrian painter Ernst Huber has captured Key West scenes in watercolor and has been captured by Key West so much that he plans to return next year for another and longer visit. ‘Famous Novel Tn Movie Form Will Be Here “Pilgrim’s Progress” On Two Nights At Harris Auditorium John Bunyan’s famous Chris- tian novel “Pilgrim’s Progress” now in movie form will be shown here in Key West for the first time next Friday and Saturday evenings at 7:30 p. m. at the Har- Tis School Auditorium, Margaret and Southard Streets. No admis- sion is being charged. The book which was written by Bunyan back in the seventeenth century while he was in prison for preaching without the consent of the government, is known around the world and has been translated into more than seventy different languages. In popularity, it is the second best seller of all times being second only to the Bible. The story is about this pilgrim who reads in a book about the coming destruction of his city and home and learns that. the only place of safety is the celestial city which is far away. During his journey to this celestial city he en- counters many enemies and dan- gers but efter many a weary mile, he rasa succeeds in reaching his goal. The notable feat of this story, though, is the fact that a direct comparison can be made between the pilgrim’s journey and the life of a Christian today amongst all the snares of Satan. The charac- The Viennese and his wife came into the Island City just long enough for him to glimpse our blue sky, water and boats set them down. He is leaving reluctantly to- day for Washington where his next exhibition opens at the exclusive Whyte Gallery on H Street. Huber, who came to the States only last December from his na- tive Austria, has some difficulty making himself .understeod by language. As soon as he and his charming wife brought his pajnt- ings in and set them up on a chair in the Citizen office, he needed no English-to get over his thoughts on Key West, His love of our color here, the| © boats, the vegetation all speak for him in his light, bright water col- ors, One painting is a view of Flem- je ing Street climaxed by the Flem- ing Street Methodist Church. The| white light for which the Island and the Keys are famous, and the blue- green-blue of Key West skies are| caught in the painting. The Robinson Gallery in Miami will show som: of Huber’s works shortly. He will hang his paintings in a big show in Switzerland in June. Information released by the Aus- trian Consulate General in New York says that Huber is “one of Austria’s greatest living He started his career as a type- setter, lithogropher and illustrator. By 1919 he had turned to painting as his chief outlet. His works hang in the public gal- leries of Vienna, London, Berlin, Nueremberg, Dusseldorf, Mann- heim and Warsaw as well as in the Pesaro Museum in Venice and the Museum of Algiers. He has been awarded numerous state and municipal prizes and medals. He has most recently been in New York doing a number of can- vases depicting the city’s life and ters are all named after some | port. hindrance or helps that the Chris- tian meets up with today; like- wise the places all are named same way, such as Slough pf Des- pair, Vanity Fair, Doubting Cas- tle, and many others. The movie, which is being spon- sored by Key West Youth for Christ, is open to éveryone and hide os ae is invited. f\Symmonette G Goes To Sales Confab J. B.
