Coral Gables Edges Conchs WOR xk x xk Jaden Ties Track Record kkk Strong Second Half Gives The Upstaters 64-46 Win Over Locals After a stirring first half battle here Saturday night, the Key West High school basketball ‘squad ran out of steam and the crack Coral Gables cagers captured a 64- 46 win, which marked the third loss in a row for the Key Westers. The Conchs apparently fell victim to the ravages of agrueling schedule when, after losing two straight con- tests by but two points, they appeared to be heading for another thriller Saturday night when they held the Gables to a 13-13 tie at the end of the first period and the halftime saw them knot- ted at 29-29, which is exact- ly the same situation Key West ran into during their Sunshine Park Will Continue | Its Operation , MIAMI (®—A major overhaul of personnel will enable Sunshine Park near Tampa to centinue rac- ing operations, Dr. Curtis Hag- gard, chairman of the Florida State Racing Commission, says. Dr. Haggard said Sunday-he had discussed a report from the track directors with Gov. Dan McCarty and they agreed the track could continue operations because it was “Taking steps in the right direc- tion.” The Commission had ordered the track to “clean up or close up” after it reported touting, bookmak- ing and the presence of juveniles amdng other undesirable condi- tions. The track’s chief of police, Mau- rice Gilbert, and two stewards have resigned, directors reported; and J. S. Siers, former chief of detectives at St. Petersburg, will succeed Gilbert. John T. Morrissey Jr., Lexing- ton, Ky., nationally-known racing official, has accepted a post as | steward and will begin his duties today, directors said. Hollis Rine- hart Jr., Miami attorney and state steward under Gov. Millard Cald- tilt which they lost to the Kentucky’ Military Institute on Friday night. Jaden captured the win in just 31.3 seconds over the 5/16 mile course to tie the track mark held by Spittin’ Image. Honest Buddy, another strong finisher ran third in the race. The winner, starting from the number eight position re- turned a whopping 23.20 to win, 7.00 to place and 7.80 to show. Spittin’ Image paid 3.00 and 2.40 while Honest Bud- dy paid 2.80. In an evening marked by giant payoffs, the Daily Double, Cover Dust and Cute Paddy; paid 189.20. The first race Quiniela returned 152.- 60 when Cover Dust and Scapel finished in that order.
