Hill Queen returned 4.20. The Daily Double last night, Mystepy Map and Vincente paid 19.80. A trio of classy canines, Forward owned by F. B. Stutz, the Ed Wulf Kennel’s Tenny C. and Cliff Wal- leré’ Lost Trail will be the favor- ites tonight when the dogs go to the post in the feature race of the evening. Tenny C. in particular, having won her last three starts in im- pressive fashion, will be the pup to watch while both of the other contenders have been in the money of late. The remainder of the field, Thataway, Buddy’s Reward, Brit- ish Isle, Last Summer, and Anna O. will be pushing the field in an effort to crack the track record set by Spittin’ Image Saturday night, Post time is 8:00 p.m. Gavilan-Davey Bout Set Wed. Chuck Davey’s attempt to take Kid Gavilan’s weiterweight title on February Mth will be televised nationally by Pabst Blue Ribbon over the CBS television network. Local fans ean hear the scheduled 154 action over CBS, begin- $10'p. m., Eastern Standard Time, > fig first time, this bout matches’ fighters whose careers have deyeloped and progressed to title- under the scrutiny of the TV'camera lens. Both Gavilan and Davey have had a majority of their important main-event bouts televised on national networks. . Kid Gavilan, the Cuban Hawk from Camaguey, gained his first fame he tangled with Ike Williams in a blistering three-bout sine. against Ike Williams in r Two of these bouts were televised on what then was the national network -- west to Chicago and south to Richmond. These Ga- vilan-Williams TV bouts are still discussed as “some of the best ever on television.” Gavilan’s ring style — speed and continual punch- ing, spiced with his patented, flashy lo punch -- brought him to main-event stature soon after his artival in the States in 1946. After a string of matches with the top lightweights and welterweights, including a losing try for Ray Re- binson’s title, Gavilan disposed of Johnny Bratton and Billy Graham to get the vacated 147 Ib. title in 1952. After a ruckus caused by the decision in the Graham bout, Ga- vilan re-emphasized his champion- ship merits by defeating Graham in a second title defense last Octo- ber 5. The Kid has also had suc- cessful title defenses against Gil Turner and Bobby Dykes. Gavilan, 27, began professional boxing in 1943. Chuck Davey, the most popular fighter ta come from the Midwest in many years, tought six feature bouts before the Pabst Blue Rib- bon CBS-TV cameras in 1952. His first,' against Ike Williams, gave him nation-wide recognition and put him into the big-money scraps. Following up with two wins over the then-sensational Chico Vejar and a victory over Carmen Basilio, Davey defeated Rocky Graziano before a large, lively-crowd at the Chicago Stadium on pale Davey’s pro . career gan in 1949 after a brilliant amateur re- cord at Michigan State University. As an amateur Chuck won N. C. A. A. welterweigut honors and was never defeated, He has carried his winning ways into the pro ranks; of his 38 bouts, he had won 36 and drawn twice. His appearance in a title’ bout offers him a dis- tinctive opportunity -- that of be- coming the second college man in boxing history to win a pro cham- pionship, Billy Soose of Penn State, by winning the 160 Ib. title in 1941, has been the only college man to win a pro boxing title thus far. The bout is expected to draw a large erdwd tothe Stadium and a multi-million television audience. Certainly the contrasting styles of the two fighters promises . much action - Gavilan always moving and swinging from the outside and Dvey, with his upright stance and fancy defensive patterns, jabbing quickly from the inside.
