Burt Lan- caster is the latest to discover this show business truism. Until recent years, the concert hall was the province of longhair singers and musicians and thought-provoking lecturers. That has been changed. It started when Charles Laughton hit the road to read from the Bible and other classics, Then Chubby teamed with Charles Boyer, Agnes Moorehead jand Sir Cedric Hardwicke with “Don Juan in Hell.” Laughton also directed this year’s gold mine, “John Brown’s Body,” starring Ty Power, Judith Anderson and Raymond Massey. These successes have sent other artists scurrying to find vehicles for concert tours. ° | Burt Lancaster announces that he plans to play the lecture cir- | cuit in a concert version of “the }Lady Is Not For Burning.” He {would play the part John Gielgud portrayed in the Broadway run of jthe Christopher Fry play. “Can you imagine me and John playing the same, role?” asked Lancaster with a grin. He’s hepped on doing it, but the tour will have to wait until he finishes some pictures. He’s now in “Sulu Sea,” then will do “From Here to Eternity” and another one. Lancaster is intent on demon- strating his versatility. He recently did a middle-aged part in “Come Back, Little Sheba.” Film studios often make an- nouncements that they are trying to buy “Oklahoma!” or “Carousel” and other Rodgers and Hammer- stein shows. This week I asked Richard Rodgers if he had any plans to sell. “Various producers ‘call us up and -ask ‘now?’” he remarked. “But so far we have no plans to sell. It wouldn’t be practical for us to do so. As far as the money is concerned, we could hold it in our hot little hands for three months and the tax collector would come and take it away. “Besides, the shows are still Playing. ‘Oklahoma!’ is in Los Angeles now and doing as well as ever.'A new company of ‘Carousel’ will be started here by Edwin Lester and will tour. ‘South Pacif- ic’ is sti on the road. We haven’t even released the stock theater rights to some of the shows.” He added that there will be no road company of “The King and | Boca I.” “It’s. an expensive show and too hard to cast,” he remarked. | “Besides, Yul Brynner is too close- ly fdentified with the show; we'll have him tour with it when. the New York run closes,”” True elephants once existed in North America as mastadons and their relatives, but they never reached South America.
